I am looking into getting myself a trail bike. I have my options down to a kdx 200 or a ttr 230. Pretty sure I would get a pretty one sided poll here if I asked for opinions, but I figured i Would join up and do some research. I have a 2006 Suzuki SV1000S for riding on the street ,but this would be my first dirt bike.

its not really a fair comparison , I would consider the TTR a starter bike and the KDX a "actual" trailbike

the KDX's seat height is about 1.5 inches higher then the TTRs as is its ground clearance
im 6 foot even and I can almost flat foot the KDX so depending on your height one of these bikes might be too tall or too little for you

on the KDXs side of the leger we have disc brakes all around, the TTR only has a front disc brake
the KDX has a bulletproof 2 stroke engine which makes much more power then the 230 4 stroke engine the TTR has
the TTR may have a smoother power delivery then the KDX aswell

because of the difference in engines the KDX will require cheaper maintenance which you can perform yourself more often
on the other hand, the TTR doesn't require premix so you don't have to worry about mixing oil and gas

I don't know about availability in your area but on my local craigslist there are 2 TTR 230s, an 05 and an 08
asking price for those two bikes is in line with the asking price for, say, a 97 KDX
ask yourself why a 5 year old TTR is just as expensive as a 16 year old KDX

bottom line, in my opinion, IF you are tall enough for the KDX and looking for something you can run day in day out, weekend after weekend it will be a better trail bike for you

but

if the TTR is closer to your size, and you are only looking for something to keep in the garage for a months at a time and take out only on labour day and independence day maybe the TTR might do the trick

I have been leaning towards kdx's for that reason, looks like more bike for the money, also my neighbor/riding buddy has one and a bunch of tools and know how to keep it running. I am 6'2" so the ttr would probably be too small. Thanks for the info!

since you have one "at your disposal" you should really run a few miles of your favorite trail system with it
find out for yourself how well it does or doesn't fit you

(on a side note, you don't need a ton of tools to keep a KDX running smooth, mine is a 96 and im pretty sure its on the stock top end)

pulled the trigger on an 02 220 this weekend, spent my free time washing tightening etc.... then ordered front and rear wheel bearings, swingarm and linkage bearings.

either way, the 220 is a great bike, tons of low end grunt
any idea if it is on the stock piston?
that is the only weakness on those bikes but it is a BIG one
they have a tendency of loosing their skirts and grenading the entire bottom end in the process

you may want to look into that ;)
