Water Pump seals???

What is the trick to keeping these from leaking? Seems like I have to replace the seals more often than not. (my bike is the 94)
So some direct questions....
Can I replace just the outer seal and leave the inner seal alone?
Is there a way to replace the inner seal w/o taking the whole side cover off?
Exactly what direction do the seals go in? (I have a manual, but it's not very good at describing this)...

Replace both. I'm guessing you only replaced the outer which is why it keeps leaking again.

If the shaft is worn where it contacts the seals, it will wear out the seals in short order.

I replaced everything (impeller shaft bearings the whole assembly) about 2 years ago, but I still have to replace these things every 6 mos or so.

Then something is wrong. 135 hours on mine and not a leak in sight. And I ride the **** out of my bike.

I agree with this. What the problem may be, I'm not sure yet.

Are you remembering to grease the seals when you install them?

is it possible that the side case is scored? I know that these seals are a weak link but I still think that I'm doing something wrong installing them....maybe backwards?
ARRGGG just so frustrating!

I'm going to resurrect this topic did you get it figured out?
Here's a couple seals should be very similar to the seals and should give a good visual for direction. I haven't done the seals on the KDX so correct me if I'm wrong but anyways the seal on the left Is the side that should be exposed behind the impeller also if you turn your clutch cover over it would be that same side of the inner seal facing you. The seal on the right shows the side of both inner and outer that would but up to each other. Hopefully that makes sense. These are just an example they are not exactly what the seals look like.

So you are saying that my seals should go into the bike just like that??
The "springs" facing away from each other?
I also think that I didn't have my bearings 'seated' correctly which would cause a huge problem....I so hope that (w/every thing) I finally got this sh!t right.....

I have an '89 and I'm pretty sure there was only one seal until '91 cuz I bought both and when I took it apart, only one was in it. Also it's a good idea to replace the shaft bearing. It was cheaper than the seals I think...

Writing on the seals goes on the outside, so just check to see how it came apart and install reverse of removal. On mine there was just one fat seal(92049D with the spring facing out). You'll need to take that right side cover off(don't worry about the gasket, if you don't break it it, it is metal) to push it out from the inside, but first knock that bearing out from outside inner race as I had to punch out the bearing before I could push that seal out. And don't forget the high temperature grease :)
