Sounds kinda funky to me. What could cause this?

Definitely something wrong. Sounds almost like it is loading up. Have you tried a fresh NGK spark plug, clean air filter, fresh fuel with quality 2T oil? Is it splooging out the exhaust real bad? What is your jetting?

Spark plug was new 2 months ago but that was before rebuild. Hadn't thought of that. I'll get a new one.
air filters clean and oiled.
fuel is new and oil is amsoil racing oil.
it has minor dripping out of the exhaust.
jetting is 48 pilot and 155 main

maybe the slide needle dropped into the carb? it happened to my XR and it sputtered just like that

I forgot, you also might want to check the condition of the reeds.
