Hey all, I'm not new to motorcycling but it has been over thirty years since I last rode a dirt bike off road. I've mostly done road racing and street riding since I the day I turned 16. I Own a new to me 2002 KDX 200 and have currently been riding Leetsville 1 or 2 times a week for the last few weeks. What a blast! If there were a rewind button in motorcycling I'd back it up about 7 years and switch to dirt!

As a side note I did donate a little to help out. Thanks to some of the posts here I have learned a bit about my bike and made putting the basket case engine back together a little clearer. ( I do have the updated factory manual but it is definitely geared towards factory trained mechanics.)

Thanks! It has been very helpful so far. And as far as trails go I can leave from my house and get to three of the four main trails in my county. Leetsvilee is less than 2 miles from here it connects me to where I want to go and you can ride on the side of the road without a plate here. Stokies!

You're not too far from me about an hour and a half south. I live 25 miles due East of Traverse city. If I had something to haul my bike with i'd take you up on that...

i know how you feel
the closest ORV trails is about an hour from me (in muskegon) and i "could" ride the bike out there (since its plated) but after 75 minutes of on road driving (because i wont take the highway on the KDX) i dont think id care much for trail riding

ive been keeping my eye out on craigslisft for an affordable trailer but the more i think about it the more i like the brand new harbor freight trailers for 300 dollars

now, a buddy of mine has a pick up truck he'd love to lend me (as long as i leave the keys to the wifeys charger with him) but then still, im off by myself since i have yet to find a bike for the wife we can afford

we did manage to head out to evart one day, with my buddy and his truck
we dropped him and his wife off in a romantic bed and breakfast a little ways before the town and me and the wifey got a hotel in evart
then i got up early the next morning and hit the trails while the wife and my boy played in the hotel pool

but that is a LOT of orchestrating just to ride a few hours

Corona, the Tomahawk system is a nice single-track. You will find it near Wolverine. It "B" loop is 48 miles of great elevation changes, and "C" loop is 41 miles. South and near you is the Frederick ORV trail. It can be fun, but sandy and you may have to share it with quads.

diymirage, Another fun single track area is near Baldwin. Go west on 10, rather than east to Evart. The Little Manistee trail is fun, and throw in the Lincoln Hills loop and you will have nearly 60 miles. Tin Cup is a short 23 mile loop, about the length of Evart, but much less technical. I get over there 3-4 times a summer.

thanks Sthutch, i actually have a coworker who owns some property up by baldwin and speak very highly of the trials there
im really hoping to get out there some day, but transportation is still he limiting factor, and i havent gotten round to ordering ORV tags yet

another thing i was wondering (while we're on the subject) how well marked are those trails (I.E.) how hard is it to get lost ?
when i rode Evart i didnt think people would actually be hunting near a motorcycle trailhead but i ended up seeing almost as many hunters as i did trees.
then i saw a deer, i was about 25 yards from it and it was a nice doe. i thought to myself, if i was a hunter id shoot that puppy. then it occured to me there were plenty of hunter out there who might have wanted to shoot it and could hit me in the proces

at that point i left the trail and hightailed it out of there, hitting a dirtroad not knowing which way i was going

The state trails are well marked, by signs and usage. However, if you jump off the trails and run the logging or county roads it can get interesting. Having a good map, or a least familiarizing yourself with the area roads before riding is good. Some of these trails are long and if you suffer a breakdown knowing where the roads are help greatly in retrieving your buddy's bike.

I don't ride the state trails during rifle season, Nov 15-30, as the riding times are restricted to:

"ORV operation is prohibited in public hunting areas during the regular November firearm deer season, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., except for these cases:
- Going to or from a residence or hunting camp that is inaccessible by a conventional vehicle (subject to state land regulations)
- On private property, with landowner’s permission
- Passenger vehicles while being operated on roads capable of sustaining automobile traffic
- Persons holding a “Permit to Hunt From a Standing Vehicle” or otherwise meeting disability requirements while engaged in hunting or fishing activity"

December rides are fun, but with the weather, I usually don't get out much. There is a 10 day season for muzzleloaders (this season varies by zonehttp://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-15 ... --,00.html), so if I ride I don't ride early in the morning or during the later afternoon hunt in order to avoid the bulk of the hunters. Also, I tend to be one of those guys in orange!
