I have a 1979 yamaha which I thought was an it250 but my friend thinks is a 175. Any old yamaha guys know how to tell the difference? Also does the stock exhaust have a spark arrestor? If not how can I make it trail legal cheap? Thanks guys

Closely inspect the cylinder. Sometimes the manufacturer will include the engine displacement in the cylinder casting. Also look at whatever is printed on the silencer body--it should mention a spark arrester if it has one. If it's the stocker, then I bet it does have one.

Thanks. Yup, I know its kdxrider. I have a 99 kdx. I also have the 79 yamaha that I left for dead 6 years ago. To my surprise we got it running and actually rode it. Thinking of putting a lil tlc into it for an extra bike. I know it needs a petcock, head light, tail light and the kill switch doesn't work. Change the trans and brake fluids and I think I should b ok. Silencer could Prolly b cleaned too.

Get a wire coat hanger and straighten it out. Stick it in the back of the silncer / spark arrestor. If it passes all the way through, then it is a silencer. If it hits something, it is a spark arrestor.
