One of my buddies has a WR250. Seemed like a good idea on paper.

I thought it sucked. Seemed like one of my old XR400s.

He got rid of it and is back on his YZ250.

Yeah, I am very leary of a 250 4-stroke with high mileage. Probably a bad idea, and definitely a bad idea to bring up 4 strokes on a KDX site. I apologize.

I have a CRF450R....

I'm not a fan of the WR250Fs, engine wise they are reliable but they are gutless and it felt really heavy. The WR450s on the other hand are awesome bikes but they need some major uncorking from factory to make them run well.

I'm still dreaming of a 2008 200xc...I've got some interest on both my bikes and once they are sold I'm picking myself a 200xc up. I can't wait! :supz:

The WR250F's are real solid bikes. Reliable motors, and the electric start is always nice. The fact remains, it is heavy and the motor is useful, but has a very soft delivery and needs to be revved.

Add to the fact one that has seen a lot of usage....

Don't make a mistake and pick the WR over the KDX. The KDX sounds awesome for you.

I agree with this. Not a bad bike, but we need to remember the rev limiter is in the range of 12500-12800 rpms as I recall. Lots of things going on in the 4T engines. Your friend has taken care of his but run it hard and long - may be a bomb ticking there.

P.S. The WR250F definitely does not feel like an old XR400. I love the XR400 bike once it is set up right - but the newer Yamaha definitely out handle, out perform, out brake and "out" everything else the XR400s except for reliability and maintenance issues. There are NO DIRT BIKES that will run longer with miminal maintenance than old XR 250/400/600s IMHO. With maintenance and care you can pass these dinosaurs onto your great grandchildren. :supz: :prayer:

Those better be *BIG* grandchildren, if they're to kick-start my XR/XL600.

But, I sure do love that old girl.....especially once it's running.

I've got one of those "dinosaurs" with a Mikuni pumper carb so now it is a one kick bike, a 416 kit and hot cam, etc. It is a tractor. Heavy, but will crawl up anything. I like the KDX though for dancing through the woods.

Indeed. "Old style" 4-strokes do no apply to any of the unreliable comments. They do not, however, compare with a 2-stroke in any way shape or form. That's where the modern 4-strokes went to the bad side. How do you make a 4-stroke as light as a 2-stroke, as powerful, and as RELIABLE? Answer....You can't....Even after 10 years of R&D. Reliability certainely has to be compromised for weight.

I agree. The new 4-strokes are certainly attractive with their lighter weight, nice suspension, smooth power delivery, etc. But, for those of us who are budget conscience, they aren't very practical. If my XR could loose 30 lbs., then I would have a true weapon. But, here is were the KDX comes in, light, reliable, chugs similar to a 4-stroke, and all for a low, low price.

Every thing is becoming impractical for the DIY-er now a days. $1000+ for a top end? No thanks :supz:

Cost me less than $400.

I put my closed course White Brothers Carbon Pro pipe on this evening....jeesus. http://www.motoworldracing.com/whitebro ... haust.html

I...don't really know what to say other than it's loud, and barks like crazy. I'll see how it handles a National "outdoor" track tomorrow. I'm kind of anxious. :prayer:

Art5 - Did you have to modify the pipe down near the cylinder? Lengthen it to get around the KX frame or somesuch?

Art5, that is one sweet hybrid! 125cc Chassis?

Bleak.....$800+ for a muffler????????? If you wanted obsurdly loud you could've just put a $10 straight pipe on it. Just so you know, that will not be AMA legal in '08. They are supposed to DB everything.

I didn't buy it, it came with the bike! :supz:

It's still well within the 98dB level right now, it's never been repacked either. I would never have spent that much money on it myself (couldn't afford it anyways) but since I have it, why not use it for closed course?

Geez, and all I wanted was advice on how to set up a KDX for woods riding!
