You should put the front sprocket guard back on. Theres nothing there to slow or stop the chain from punching a hole in your case if it derails. There should be a aluminum piece that bolts on to the 2 bolts just in front and below the sprocket.

This bike is slowly starting to grow on me, it's going to be hard to sell it because it's becoming that good of a bike. Cleaned out the fork seals with some old camera film and they don't leak anymore, now I need to find the correct oil height in the tubes for this bike and replenish them. I wonder if this same trick can work on the shock?

No, the shaft is too small for the film. It probably needs fresh fluid anyway. It breaks down over time and use.
