The "Headlight Replacement Bulb Info" Thread

Post by SS109 »

It seems no one ever came up with good info for a replacement bulb for the stock KDX headlight bulb. Well, I have been researching for a while now and have come up with a pretty good list of crossover bikes/atv's that use the same one or only with a different watt rating. I also shared this info over at Thumpertalk but figured since this is THE source for KDX info I should post it here as well. I hope this helps some new to the KDX and even to some of the grumpier old timers!

For the cheapest 30w replacement bulbs I have found at $2.80 each click the following link! http://www.hyperparts.com/wc.dll?ctwp~i ... 02~H290715

I personally am using the Super Spots™ part # 43410 (35/35 watt, xenon, super white) that you can find at any Yamaha dealer. Pricey but worth it IMO. BTW, RMstator also sells them for $18. Not sure if that is for one or two bulbs???

CROSSOVER INFO

The factory bulb is what is known as an "H6M" based bulb. It is stamped on the base of the bulb "30/30" which indicates that it is a dual filament bulb and each filament is rated at 30 watts.

The following models also use the the same bulb type as the KDX...

When SS posted this on TT, I bought two from HyperParts for $2.80 ea and they shipped fast and they work perfectly. For all I plan to use my headlight for (emergency get home light) I am very happy.

That is awesome! Kawasaki wants almost $30 for the stock bulb. I just soldered the two terminals together so that I could use the filament that wasn't burnt out. Looks like I can now replace the bulb; there was no way I was going to pay almost $30 for a light bulb!

Thank you very much!

If you soldered the terminals together, aren't you running 60 watts all the time, with both the high and low beam filaments burning? I do not know what the stock lighting coil output is rated at, but I would like to run a 55w light on my bike. The stock 30/35w just doesn't cut it for night trail riding.

Stock stator is roughly 40 watts.

I run the 35 watt, xenon Super Spots and two 1157 LED bulbs with no problem. I thought it wasn't much an improvement over stock at first but now, with it dark when I go to work, I have changed my mind. These bulbs are a very noticeable improvement over the stock bulb. Try one and see what you think. It is a lot cheaper than upgrading your stator and to a 55/60 headlight!

No, one filament was burnt out.

i haven't had my headlight go out, but when my tail light was out i took the bulb down to the local napa and the guy pulled out a huge book that broke down bulbs by watts and plug types and i'm sure they could find a suitable replacement,
my rear light was a whole 1.95$ i think

I'm sure the local NAPA could find a cross reference for it but I bet they don't carry any H6M based bulbs in stock. Matter of fact, I'd lay money on that!

I took my head light bulb into three local auto parts stores and they could not cross reference it. That is when I went to the nearest Kawasaki dealer and they wanted almost $30.

How about this:
http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/produ ... lyId=23126

It is a H6M base, and it fits the KLX250/300, which uses the same bulb as the KDX.

Yep, that will work. It is the same thing as the Super Spots bulb I use. I highly recommend them for anyone needing/wanting higher light output but running the stock stator. However, I don't know how well it will work with a standard tail light bulb as they draw more watts than my LED setup.

With my DS kit (and 10 AA Ni-Cads wired in series for a battery), when I activate the brake light, the headlight dims a bit. I need the 1157 LED bulb that you have. Where did you get it?

nm. I answered my own question. The 89 is the only year that uses a different bulb. They are the same from 90+. I guess that's something to do with the lack of VR on the 89? I'll be using the harness and VR from the 91, so it should do....

I think i'll try those bulbs from rocky mountain.

The ones I use are the cheapy ones from Autozone. They have been durable but I don't recommend them if you are dualsporting as one by itself is not bright enough for street use. I had to solder two of them together and relocate them so they faced straight to the rear. I'll try to take a pic later.

Now, maybe one of these...

...might do the trick for using only one and in the stock location. The only downfall to this one is that they are not cheap at $18 each. (http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/ ... htm#photos)

I was going to buy the Trailtech one from Rocky Mountain, but it is red, and I will not have legal plate illumination if I use it. It is odd that the white ones cost more...
I am going to get a 1 watt led tail light bulb, and use the super spot style headlight bulb and see if that gives me what I am looking for.
Lighting is the one thing that I miss from my old DRZ, compared to the KDX.
