reeds?

Post by pinitwot »

i just got a 01 kdx 220 and it rips! any way i was wondering about reed mods? the bike has a fmf ganarly pipe and a turbine core 2 silencer. also it has the air box lid removed and it has a uni filter.

i was wondering how much a difference reeds make in perfamance wise.???

i have been looking at Boyesen Power Reeds and they are by far the cheapest.

also i have seen v-frorce and rad valves. wich are more exspencive. these both look like they come with the whole outer casing, and all i would have to do is unbolt the old ones and put them in?????

they boyesen power reeds look like i would have to remove the old reeds just the flappy part. and then put the new ones in using the stock casing??

so i was wondering if any one uses any of these and how well have they worked for u?

thanks

The Boyesens are nice... the V Force is the best though....

Forget the RAD!

I'm using boyesen 607's (power reeds) and they work quite well. Added a bit more throttle response down low, and the bike felt snappier all around. The V Force is supposed to be the best thing for the KDX, but it's spendy.

Yes, you are correct. Teh V-Force will replace the entire reed cage, the boyesen power reeds are just replacement reeds.

anyone have any exsperiance with the v- force? would it be worth the extra $100 to get the v force over the boyesen power reeds?

also there are to different types of v force: V FORCE 3 REED VALVES and V FORCE DELTA 2 REEDS. i can get them for the same price is one better than the other?

thanks

You may as well go for the newer version, dontcha think?

As far as if it's worth an extra 100, that's hard to say. The boyesen's work really well, the v force would have to work a damn sight better for it to be worth an extra $100 of my money. Seems from folks input on the v-force, it does work better. $100 worth of better? Try it out an then tell me.

Off idle throttle response is where it truly excels...No one is ever out constantly dyno testing a KDX, but many many reports of off idle goodness are the DF3's trait. Like being able to lug a full gear higher where the motor would die w/ stock reeds.

RAD Valve is a high-rpm type, sacrificing low end.

so ur saying the v force 3 reeds are very good in many peoples oppion and give u lots of low end.
and what about the boysen power reeds? are they similer by giving low end power just not a effective?

I haven't used Boyeson reeds, but their website says this:

"More Overall Power. Dual-stage reeds work in unison to perform efficiently throughout the entire powerband. The difference in stiffness between the top reed and the bottom reed allow the reeds to respond quickly and accurately to changes in engine pressure. This translates into quicker acceleration, crisper throttle response and increased horsepower throughout the powerband.

THE BENEFITS
• Quicker acceleration for that all-important holeshot.

• Crisper throttle response for fast corner exits and surer jumps.

• More horsepower throughout the powerband for guaranteed performance.

• Improved engine efficiency and fuel economy for the long distance rider.

• Longer life - Boyesen Power Reeds outlast all other aftermarket reed petals."

I just put the v force3 on my 99 220r and got more response. The power band comes on much faster and my top end holds out better! Just a quick review hope it helps!

I seem to recall that early versions of the V-Force did not fit all that well, causing the carb to interfere with the shock spring.

How do the newer versions fit the KDX?

Yes, the round coily-thing that wraps around the shock absorber right behind the carburetor.

If you have a Race Tech spring, which I think are a bit larger in OD, I seem to recall that the thicker VF reed block gets the right/rear corner of the carb/float bowl very close to, if not interfering with, the shock spring. But I confess that my memory is becoming more questionable every year. I don't have one of these reed blocks, but I thought I remembered someone on DRN commenting on this years ago.

Actually, I was asking for clarification more than anything, because I might upgrade to a VF-III this winter.

Although I dont have any experience with the V-force in a KDX, hopefully soon, I have put them in my YZ250s and 03/04 KX250s with good results across the board. A little more power everywhere and it seemed to make the bikes rev a little further in every gear. Ive tried both the Vforce 2 and the 3. The only drawback to the Vforce 3 is that the reeds seem to wear out faster and they fray around the edges. The replacement reeds are around $50, so they aint cheap! The V2 seems to last longer. This is under racing conditions, around 15-20 enduros so my findings maybe different from someone that doesnt race as often or just trail rides. I never could get my KX250s to run right with the Boyeson reeds, always seemed rich, even after rejetting them. I ran a Rad valve in my old KTM250EXC and it really woke that bike up. I have heard that it was more mid-top oriented, but worked well in the KTM.

I don't think the rad valves are junk accross the board, but they don't seem to be the ticket for these motors.
