UFO plastics don't match green

Post by Juke22 »

I feel like this is old news, but i'd like to share my frustration with UFO Plast from Italy.

Paid $150 for plastics. When they arrived I noticed they were a slightly different shade of green from my 2000 KDX200. They don't match the frame paint or the OEM plastics.

I tried to get a refund, but the return shipping cost more than the purchase. I went back & forth emailing UFO, and they claimed their products were an exact color match to the Kawasaki Pantone, and that "they haven't had an issue in 20 years". They kept trying to tell me that my bike was "old and sunfaded", despite me showing them the brand-new Kawasaki number plate I purchased from the dealer, and a new can of ColorRite paint i used to touch-up the frame, which matched the old paint exactly.

The OEM Kawasaki paint is more lime green, while UFO is like neon green. This is their "regular green", apparently they have fluorescent green that must be even brighter. I made sure all my purchases were the Regular green -026. On their website, they listed 2000 KDX200 with the plastics I purchased.

The iphone camera enhances colors, but i find the difference very noticeable and annoying in person. Also saw a 17-year old forum post that said the same thing:

Bad company, buyer beware. The plastics themselves were good quality. If you replace all OEM green like the tank and all plastics, and have a silver 2003+ frame, you won't notice the color.

1. When new, the OEM plastic was not a perfect match to the frame paint. Close, but not perfect.

2. For many years, they have sold the 2005+ shade of lime green as "lime green". Many years ago, UFO code "-026" was the 2004 and older shade of lime green. Kawasaki changed the shade in 2005. The 2005 and newer KX's and KDX's had the newer shade. This was 21 years ago when the 2005's hit the dealer floor. At some point, UFO started making all the KDX plastics (maybe others??) in the 2005 + shade only. There were a few years where they made both.

This was covered on this site maybe a decade ago. Put them on Facebook Marketplace, get what you can.

The OEM plastics cost SUBSTANTIALLY more, like triple as much, if you want the original color NOS.
The 2004 & earlier Kawasaki green paint code is code #7F Green. The later lighter lime green is three digits, maybe #777? I can't recall exactly the #. The KDX used silver frames in those years, so the revised paint code doesn't apply to them.
The UFO are still well worth it considering the low cost, it's still a value. It's unfortunate that they don't staye "fits 1995-2006 KDX200/220, exact match for 2005-2006 KDX."

I personally run the purple shrouds and tank + seat & graphics with a Maier MX-style KDX rear fender, with zero complaints. I do have some green UFO shrouds, but never installed them nor even put graphics on them, so I never really compared them in a critical way side by side, but the '05+ version green is definitely more limey...
Run the whole set or else buy new OEM...???

I wonder what you'd find in stock still from OEM sources? Look up to see the original part #'s for late 1990's KDX plastics vs 2006 KDX200-H12 part #'s for the same parts, order the older part # if possible

The UFO purple is a pretty darn good match

You can still get an OEM headlight, although like I said you would have to check the part numbers to see if it's the old version or the 2005-2006 version, but for what you paid for the entire set of plastics, that same money, $150, might get you an OEM headlight with shipping...

Sorry about your shock when you found out the color discrepancy early versus late KDX, but it's still a fair deal in my eyes. I'm happy they still support our bikes.
They consolidated colors due to not wanting to stock the raw materials for both shades, with most of their Kawasaki demand likely being sales if parts for newer models. It's unfortunate, but at least they still support our bikes.
