Oxbow Helmet Light Alternative

Post by SS109 »

Here my first look and comparison of the cheap Amazon helmet light vs the Oxbow Voyager. Personally, I think this is a way better value than the Oxbow but I can understand why some would want the easier to mount Oxbow. I think it is just as bright as the Oxbow and I prefer the mode of operation of the cheaper light. Anyway, I haven't done an actual ride with it yet so we shall see. I'll post up my ride review here when it happens.

How's the battery run time?

Amazon claims 6-8 hours on a fully charged battery, but doesn't state if thats 6 hours on medium and 8 hours on low etc.

https://www.amazon.com/TANSOREN-Lumens- ... 00Y441QT2/

I believe that's the same exact light.

Night riding is awesome 👍
Even a familiar trail feels like a completely different world and completely different experience. I'm trying to get more friends set up on their KDX's & KTM's with good headlights. As a backup, I carry a rechargeable bicycle headlight at night, but also can use that for friends.
We've done short night rides going into twilight hours with the 2 guys without headlights, each one sandwiched between the 3 bikes with headlights. It'll get you out of the woods, but is no good for technical rock gardens or other tricky terrain, obviously...

Let me know about the real run time on low or high if you can.

I've added this to my shopping list 👍

The Oxbow was close to it's claimed run time on high at 2h 54m. The cheap Tansoren was 3h 26m on high. I assume the difference was that the LED's in the Tansoren put out less light but my eyes couldn't see the difference or it could be because it has a much larger heat sink, thereby running cooler, and making the battery last longer. The Oxbow runs hot enough it hurts to touch it even when I had a small fan cooling both lights during testing whereas the Tansoren was hot but could be touched with your bare hand.

Update! I figured out an easy GoPro type mounting system for this cheap light and used it on my first night ride of the year. I ran the light for just over 2 hours and zero issues. I hope this encourages some of you to get out there and try a night ride as they are a blast!

So from the video for the Tansoren updated light mount, it looks like you had to buy not only the $14 Amazon mount which you've highlighted in the video,

Interesting, the Amazon link I posted above this line (same on the YouTube video description) is not showing up?!?

but also some sort of standard GoPro mount?
Can you perhaps link a similar GoPro mount?

I'm not a GoPro user, so that's not a familiar mounting bracket to myself and some others.

Thanks!

Of course! Below is a pic of the parts needed to mount to your helmet. First you need the base (#1) that sticks to your helmet. They come come in curved and flat. I have found that the curved base is normally the ones I end up using as I mount on the actual helmet itself and not the visor. . Then you need a shoe (#2 and #3) that locks into the base that will help give the best mounting position for your helmet. Then you'll need the screw (#4) to secure it in position. That's all you'll need. You can find these kits on Amazon really cheap for as low as about $10-$20. This particular kit I used for the pic is $12.99 and available here: https://www.amazon.com/HSU-Adapter-Incl ... 183&sr=8-9

LOL! Hey, it takes me a while to figure things out when I jump into something new. The whole GoPro,YouTube, and video editing thing has been a steep learning curve for me.
