92 KDX200 Clutch Cover Basket is Notched

Post by SpruceItUp »

Hey everyone! Recently my KDX200 has been dragging a lot in first, like the clutch isn't disengaging all the way. It's always dragged a bit, but I was messing with the lever a bit and now I can't seem to get it back to anywhere that it isn't dragging really badly. So I took the clutch cover off and can see the clutch basket is notched. I don't know how badly it is as I don't mess with the clutch very often, so I figured I'd ask you guys to see. I was wondering if it could be filed down, or if it needs replaced. Here's a photo. It seems like the friction discs are notched as well.

Thanks!

Also, the oil seal where the push rod goes through the clutch cover (inspection cover) is definitely shot. I've been looking online and I cannot seem to find the correct one, and the partzilla diagram is kind of a PIA to read.
Here's the photo of the seal. It's been leaking oil and apparently letting a little bit if dirt into the case, which needs to be fixed ASAP.

The replacement seal number is 92049-1262.

On your dragging first gear, take a look at your clutch basket. Notice the notching. That will cause the clutch to drag as the clutch plates cannot slide freely. Those notches look pretty nasty but you could try filing them flat but it will only work for so long. The other option is to replace the basket with anew ProX one.

EDIT: Just noticed your plates are pretty notched as well. I would definitely replace them.

I appreciate the information! I'll look into buying a new clutch basket. I figured you guys would suggest a new one with how deep the notches are.
Do you have any suggestions on friction plates? Are the Pro X plates any good?

Edit: PartsGiant has a ProX clutch basket for $200 so I'll go with that. They also have the ProX Friction Plates for $80 so I'm going to buy those as well.

Edit 2: Nevermind, the ProX plates are out of stock on a few sites. I'll take some recommendations on what plates are good :)

Good evening! I started to take apart the clutch, so I took the side cover off, everything is going well.
I got my new parts and all.
One question: When I pulled off the cover, there was a metal ring that came with it and I'm trying to figure out where it goes. Any clues? I tried looking at the partzilla diagram but no luck so far. Here's a photo:
Thanks!

I might've figured out what it is maybe: 92022C for the kickstarter mechanism? Right on top of the collar that holds the spring? That would make sense. :)

92022C is a reference number, not a part number. Do you know the part number?

Ope, good point. It's under 'Kickstarter Mechanism' 92022-271 "Kawasaki OEM Washer".
Thanks :)
Edit: Yep that's it. I believe it just stuck to the side case and fell out when i turned it over on my workbench.
Appreciate it!

They certainly are!

I got the clutch back together today with the new basket and clutch discs and it is working as intended! The bike still drags a tiny bit, but I heard that's pretty typical of KDX's?

Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated!

It's a bit dirty, but here's a picture of the bike, as I've never given one on this forum! Don't mind the red clutch lever, I popped that one off of my CR for testing while I wait on a new lever. The old one was part of my concern of why it was dragging. :) Oh, and ignore the two hanging wires, I had to cut the zip tie on them today 🤣

Looks good! Get the brake hose on the correct side of the fork leg.

Didn't realize that. Thanks for pointing that out, I'll fix that!
