KIPS rattle too load?
Hi,
i just bought a KDX200 from 2004. There is a pretty load noise besides the Enginesound.
Is this still the KIPS Rattle? Or is it something different?
Im worried to drive the bike with this sound
Exspecially in the end of the video you can hear the strange noise clearly…

Would be verry pleased if you can cool me down with that noise

Re: KIPS rattle too load?
Definitely sounds like KIPS rattle to me but to the extreme. I would pull the pipe so you can see the operation of the sub-valves/flapper and operate the KIPS by hand to see if everything is moving correctly.

Could also be clutch basket finger wear.Pull clutch lever in and see if noise changes. If clutch basket fingers are worn it will chatter.

That will only tell you that the mechanism that drives the KIPS valves is working but doesn't show that the valves themselves are.
You'll have to pull the pipe, look up in the exhaust port, and move by hand that little plunger you see popping out in the video, and see if all the valves are actually moving.

Good deal. didn't see it in the video but did you make sure the right subvalve was working also? If so, KIPS is good to go! However, checkout kdxazz's videos about the KIPS rattle: viewtopic.php?f=77&t=25522 and viewtopic.php?f=77&t=25525 While I do disagree with parts, he does cover some things that should be checked if you have excessive rattle from the KIPS and ways to fix it.Laurenz_KDX200 wrote: ↑02:23 pm Apr 11 2022 Thanks for your quick reply. Im trying the thing with the copper plate from the video above
Is there a special type of oil i should use when i reassembel the Kips? Should i use Locktite for these two screws?

Also check compression. My son's KDX was rattling pretty bad. I assumed it was the KIPs but when I tore the engine down, the KIPs wasn't even connected! The little actuator pawl ( the one that is secured with the nut with left hand threads) on the right side was not even contacting the KIPs main shaft. His top end was just that wore out.

Re: KIPS rattle too load?
Worn top end. Piston was bouncing around in the cylinder. Combination of worn bore, worn piston, and worn rings. Glad I caught it before the piston shattered. Just got the cylinder back from replating yesterday. Plan on starting reassembly this weekend if everything checks out ok. My own KDX was getting a little noisy too. I rebuilt it last year including a cylinder replate and it is nice and quiet now.

Doing a new piston and rings in my 220 also took away what I thought was KIPS rattle.

How long did it take them to replate your cylinder?

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Re: KIPS rattle too load?
Ah f**k, i was hoping to leave the top end untouched, so i mustn‘t buy new top end gaskets… i have this compression measering tool in the picture below… how much psi should my KDX have to know that everything is fine inside the top end?
Is it possible to re-use the Gasket of the Cylinder Head?
Ps.: thank you all for your advices :)

Gamble and ride it or tear it down and know for sure. Have a serious talk with your wallet.
