E and H engine parts interchangeability
I just purchased a 97 kdx200. Upon taking the tank off I realized the engine mount on the back of the head didn’t match the frame bracket. I thought the frame must be bent but then realized I had a different year motor. The number on my motor is KH1 DX200 EE 0000. When I search, I come up with a 1992 model engine. Anyways, my question is…can I swap out my current cylinder and head for one from a 95 or newer 200? I would like to make this motor attach like it is supposed to. Thanks for any input.

Sadly, no, you can't swap heads between H and E series bikes. That said, you could make your own brackets easy enough with just some common tools.

Thanks for the reply. I compared the heads and can see why they won’t swap. I was wondering if the H cylinder itself will bolt and work on the E cases.

No, the cylinders won't swap either. They are two completely different designs.

Ok thanks. That is too bad. I can make the brackets unless I found someone that wanted to swap an E for an H. I appreciate your input.

Re: E and H engine parts interchangeability
I noticed last night that the exhaust expansion chamber has been bashed in to gain clearance for the mechanism on the right side of the head. I assume this is the H model pipe that came with the bike and won’t quite fit with the E head. Any idea if an E model bikes expansion chamber and pipe will fit on this Frankenstein combo? I’m amazed at how much power it has since its obviously more restricted with the exhaust crushed in.

Re: E and H engine parts interchangeability
No clue how well an E-series pipe will fit as the chassis between the two are so different with one being a backbone type frame and the other a perimeter type. That said, if the pipe has been clearanced on the right side it probably won't hurt performance much if at all. The critical areas on a two stroke pipe are in the first two bends of the pipe, the initial turn out and then the turn sending the pipe to the right side of the bike. If those are good and the smashed part isn't smashed more than a 1/3 of the pipes diameter you probably won't experience any noticeable power loss due to it.

Re: E and H engine parts interchangeability
Thanks ss109. I should be good with the pipe then. I’m kinda particular about being mostly original, so maybe I’ll get lucky and find a rebuildable H motor. So far what I’ve seen on eBay is pricey. At least this one fits and seems to run pretty good. Any advantage with the E motor?

Re: E and H engine parts interchangeability
Some believe the E engine to be stronger than the later H. The only thing bad about the E engines was the poor KIPS subvalve design. Luckily, BDK out of England makes upgraded parts that solves the failures of the OEM pieces.
