Hello from Texas
Hi guys, just found this site. Thanks for accepting me into your group.
I just bought a 98’ KDX 220 for a song earlier in the week. Been extremely busy at work so I haven’t even given it a kick. I know it has fueling issues as the kid I bought it from said it’ll start, rev to the moon, then bog down and die.
Hope to get a chance to Begin the tear down soon. Have a few small honey doos to finish up first unfortunately.
I’m Sure I’ll have a few questions for the group to laugh at soon.

Were here to help. I'll get the popcorn ready.
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Re: Hello from Texas
Welcome to the group. Pull and clean the carb first thing, and make plans for a top end job unless the PO has already pulled the OEM piston (search on here for 220 piston to see why), and get a service manual. Then have fun.

Thanks a lot. Thanks and yes I’m already aware of the piston issue. This is my first 2 smoke since the mid 90s.

Re: Hello from Texas
Ok so I finally began the project. First objective being get it to run. Cleaned carb, new plug etc... Reinstalling the carb I found the intake boot torn, not surprised. This carb is the Keihin 38mm and the boot seems too small. Period, even with the tear I can’t get it to spread out to what seems effective. Has Vforce 3 reeds. Is there a specific boot for the 38mm ???
Thanks in advance
Greg

Re: Hello from Texas
OK, after a quick search, which I’m terrible at on these places. Sounds like most here prefer the stock 36mm. Previous owner had it, I left without grabbing it. I’ll contact him.
Any recommendations from you guys will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Hello from Texas
The stock carb on your 220 is a 33mm. The 33 and the 35 from the 200 are the same size body on the carb. The 36 and 38 are larger bodied. I stretched a 38 onto another bike and wouldn't want to try it on the KDX.

Got the stock 33mm in my possession, not in good shape at all...
Anybody have one for sale ?
Or has anyone used an ebay / amazon knockoff with success ?

Don't use the knockoff's. Their not the same.

Re: Hello from Texas
Can I make a 96’ 200 carb work ? I know it’s the stock 35mm. I suck at searching and can have the the carb in hand quickly. Really want this project running Lol.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Hello from Texas
Yes it will work fine, you will lose just a touch of bottom end, but also gain a little top. Needs to be jetted properly of course.

Re: Hello from Texas
Thanks bufftester, yes I have enough jets on hand to dial in I believe. The 35mm is on the way. I’ll report back soon.
Thanks everyone

Welcome to the team Greg! I have a 97 220 with a 04 200 35mm carb on it. It runs great so far. Good luck. You are going to love the bike.
