Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will do a tear down this wknd. Hard to imagine any dirt in carb as its been cleaned recently, and I am using an in line filter since the new top end in March.

SS: The polishing worked great for me. I havent had this issue since I did it until now.
Doug: Are you still running the oem PWK? We may be the only ones left.... :hmm:

Yes, still using the stock carb. An RB is probably my next move.

Yeah, that was a cool little tip that another member posted years ago. It saved my butt before!

BTW, my carb is original but been modified by RB.

I did check in with him a few months ago and heard he's not doing the mod any longer. Only way is to buy a new Keihin from him. I dont think Im at that point-yet!

I think I am leaning toward RB AS carb.

- Please let me know if I have this about right:
Both type of RB carbs start from stock Keihin bodies.
AS - a bit better for riding that puts the carb at extreme angles.
OEM - a bit better riding at WOT.

Primarily I am riding trials-ish 1st gear trails at home, and the single track or jeep hill climb trails at Walker Valley, WA (roots, rocks, & concrete blocks). Elevation: 0-2000. My riding inclinations - I am considering switching to trials tires.

Thanks very much for seat polishing and other tips. The floor, in KDX section of the boat shed, looks a bit like an AMF Harley running synthetic oil lives there.

What happened? Somebody stole my KDX and left this fire breathing dragon in it’s place!! Well... that’s how it feels after my first real ride with the new OEM style carb from Ron Black! Man, this thing just rips! I cannot believe the difference. Took just a little fine tuning with the air screw but runs great right out of the box. Plug chop test looked toasty tan. Wish I had done this long ago. Now I can’t wait for the first race!

Yea baby! So glad to hear it.
I dropped my PJ down to 38 couple days ago, since I could not get proper idle (turns out I had a 42 rather than 40 in mine as per spec sheet) and went for 1st real ride today. Damn beast about pulled the bars out of my hands! It was honestly a little hard to hang onto climbing hills in the rain. I just better eat my spinach before next ride.
I’ll do some chops too just to be sure top is good, but seems even better now.

Between Doak and my new KTM buddy, I am kinda thinking ..... just one little race on my beginners bike wouldn’t hurt anything, would it?

I've raced it a couple of times now and love the new RB modded carb! This just feels like a different bike. I'm sown right now due to both COVID and an eye surgery so taking this time to renew the top end and have RB work his magic on the head too.

Have Jeff Fredette bore and jet yours He does both for around 90 dollars and I can tell you mine is Done I dont have to fiddle with it at all the first 2 stroke I have been finished in the motor department no fiddling!!! I did buy an 36mm air striker for my 98 220 just needed jetting but looking back and forward Ill have Fredette work over my carbs from now on Can you argue with all the gold medals and silvers he has won on the kdx He is a know it all

As much as I respect Jeff Fredette, as he is the king of racing the KDX, I like my RB modified carbs better. Yeah, it is definitely a much more expensive upgrade but well worth it over just a bored carb alone.

Oh, and a carb is never done being fiddled with on a 2T unless it only sees a climate controlled environment!

Well i guess i have to say I have never tried the Rb carburater But I have nothing else to ask for with my fredette modded carb It runs as good as any fuel injected bike ive ridden and it is spot on every where granted if I go to higher elevation I wold have to rejet but we all would in that matter I guess its all a matter of preference we all have them and are free to choose what we think is best. Has anyone tried a 38mm on a kdx for grins would like to know how that turned out. Thanks for sharing your experience with me

I was able to get my orig carb running correctly, no more fuel draining and it was running well. While I had it apart, I polished the valve seat again (I believe this makes a huge difference with the older carbs). Anyway after reading these threads about the RB modded carbs, (and with a few bucks burning a hole in my pocket), I emailed Ron and picked up a new PWK carb. Its def worth the money and the carb is great out of the box w/ standard settings. Very noticeable improvement with divider plate and the 36mm bore. :busted: :supz:

Very cool !! Glad you liked it. I just installed the extended finger airscrew on mine since realizing what a small dif can make it pull like mad at any elev. (I ride 200 - 1800 at the ORV park). Mine runs great at home & good even if I never touch it.
But it runs great wherever I am if I give it that little girl tiny twist when we are on one of higher trails.
Someday I’ll ride often enough to remember in or out, without having to think about it.
