Quick Needle Question

Post by chippy »

2006 KDX200
FMF Woods pipe
152 mj and 35 pilot - 1 1/2 turns on air screw
DEL needle on TOP clip (leanest)

Runs great at this jetting/needle combo.
I just don't want the needle in the top clip position. That said, I believe the next needle to use would be a DGL ? That should put my clip position back to the middle (3rd). Is this correct?
Thanks,
Chip

That is correct, DGL clip 3 = DEL clip 1

Re: Quick Needle Question - what would you change first?

Well while we're on the subject...

SUBJECT: @2,200' elevation - temps in the 50's
2003 200 with OEM pipe/FMF silencer (freshly packed)/OEM reeds (look fine) / snorkle removed, freshly installed carb kit w/ OEM spec jets 48/160 and OEM spec needle, OEM #5 slide looks good, AS is about 2.25-2.5 turns out, NGK BR8EIX. I think I'm on 2nd or 3rd clip from the top? I like this anvil OEM pipe, it's paid for, and tougher than I am so not interested in replacing it. It has a fresh copper ring and o-rings/red RTV and no dents or leaks BTW.

Very smooth running bike, purrs like a kitten, starts first kick, I've only ever fouled it once (operator error). Running fresh (no-E) 91 octane @ 40:1 with a low flash point pre-mix and getting minimal smoke and minimal spooge. Running hare scrambles and local trails in the woods and steep mountains in SW Virginia. Geared at stock 13/47.

COMPLAINTS:
If anything, maybe it feels a little muddy off the bottom, would like just a little more off-idle oomph to lift the front wheel for logs (one of my skill weaknesses right now) - but screams on top. I'd also like a crisper, smoother transition from 1/8 to 1/2 throttle.

I've considered adding the 'torque ring' and doing the 'Slide Mod'... #7 slide (w/recommended 42/155 jets using the stock needle on 4th clip). When my improving skill level reaches the point that I'm ready for more real power or need it to be more competitive in hare scrambles (hopefully by 2022 race season) I plan to mount the FMF woods pipe, have FRP port it, and upgrade my reeds and jets to whatever he recommends. I do understand there is a certain order to these things, but I'm not in a hurry to uncork her to max potential just yet.

QUESTION:
Is there a cheap solution to my rather minor complaint or is my complaint unfounded?

IIWM I'd try one size down on the pilot. You're right at the edge on the air screw of when you would do that and it may help sharpen the bottom end a touch. Bonus is that it's cheap (cost of a pilot jet if you don't have one ~10$ shipped).

For the transition you could try running the needle up and down i clip to see where it feels best, beyond that you're looking at changing needle tapers to fine tune it more.

Yep, go one leaner on the pilot. It is too far out on the air screw.
