Lot to learn

Post by allair »

My son bought a 93 KDX 200. He is 15 and it will be good for him and me to work on it together. I've been scouring over articles and info and have a couple of questions. Where is the best place to purchase a service and repair manual? The obvious problems are: Wont idle, No more adjustment on the clutch and it kills when you put it in gear unless you have it reved up, runs rough pretty much any rpm. thought we would clean the carb tomorrow and start from there. Anyway glad to be part of the forum. I grew up on a cr 125 but this bike looks like it will be a fun bike when we get the bugs out of it.

Welcome to kdxrider.net. Congratulations on the KDX.

eBay for a used OEM manual (GET VERSION TWO, as version one does not have the USD fork info)
Cyclepedia makes a manual

Clean the carb, but DO NOT put it in Berryman's or another usual "dip". Beyond that, fresh fuel, fresh plug (NGK B8ES or BR8ES), clean and oiled filter
clutch basket may be notched (read up on notched baskets)

Take note of your jet sizes when you clean your carb, too

We cleaned the carb and I forgot to note jet sizes. oops. Anyway wondering if carb is shot because there is plating missing on the bottom of the slide. (about the size of half a dime). Not up on carbs, but one post did talk about the slide needing to seal, and im sure it cant with that plating gone. New plug and clean air filter. Did improve a bit, but still a long way to go. Also, Just went and test drove a 94 200 that is for sale down the road. Really nice and clean and runs well. My question is this, having never been on a KDX, Is the forum called the KIPS rattle literal ? There was definitely for a lack of the right word a rattle or sound on the top end. It wasnt a knock or anything and sounded in time with the motor. Do the KIPS valves make noise when idling ? I would like to get it so we could kind of swap parts back and forth for trouble shooting. Plus it would let my son get riding as we work on his bike. Thanks

They do make a touch of noise.

I am not sure how to differentiate it from piston slap, though.

If the plating is off the slide, then that is NOT GOOD.

I am not really the one to tell someone NOT to buy a KDX. If you can afford the other one, then get it. It will help TREMENDOUSLY on swapping back and forth on parts for testing, as well as figuring out what is supposed to be where.

Thank you. It’s easy to hear even sitting on the bike. Wish I knew someone with some experience. It runs good enough I can’t imagine it’s a problem.

Does it go away when you rev the bike?

Seems to me different KDX bikes have more or less of the KIPS “rattle”. My riding buddy’s is much louder than mine. We both race them regularly and they both run very strong. Do a compression check perhaps?

I’m with KDXGarage, I’m not the one to tell you not to buy one.
