Hello everyone! My name is James and I bought an 03 KDX 220 a few months ago. Always wanted one and this one came up for sale close to me. $1200 later, it followed me home.
I have been racing harescrambles and GNCC for most of my life. Work and other things forced me to retire for the most part about 2 years ago. I got talked into racing the Snowshoe GNCC on a friend's KX500 and fell back in love with it. I made it a point to get back out there and have fun again.
The bike had a complete rebuild before I bought it and ran extremely well. It has a FMF Gnarly pipe, boyseen rad valve, and an RB carb and head. It had a few cosmetic issues but I didn't really care about that. I bought it on a Tuesday and raced it that Saturday lol.
The race went pretty well. I placed 4th in Open B out of 15 and got 31st overall. I was completely out of shape and had no time on the bike. The first problem I found with the bike was how low the front forks hung down. Every rut I went into almost sent me over the bars with a dead stop. I decided a fork swap was in order.
I had a set of 46mm YZ forks leftover from an old race bike and got to work. I pressed the kdx stem into the YZ clamps, knurled the stem, and made a small bushing for the top clamp. I used the YZ caliper bracket with the KDX caliper. Topped it off with a new tusk front wheel, UFO headlight, and Polisport universal front fender.
This completely changed the big for the better. Fast, choppy sections could now be attacked with ease. The second race of the season saw another 4th place finish, even with alot of dumb mistakes on my part.
I still feel kind of cramped on the bike so I'm contemplating a hybrid build. Been on the hunt for an 03 KX125 frame or even an old steel framed RMZ/KXF 250.
Below are some pictures of the bike and one beside my prized dualsport. Thanks for having me and I look forward to the rest of this race season!

WOW. welcome to the forum. Living in West Virginia and utilizing all it has to offer is a good deal. I skied at Snowshoe no less than 15 times over the years and always wanted to bring a dirt bike back up there. A friend of mine raced GNCC and always made the Snowshoe event. I'd love to see that setup in person one year only because I know first hand how difficult the terrain actually is.
Best of luck here and GNCCing.

Looks awesome mate! Jealous of those GNCC style trails in the Appalachians. Looks like some beautiful country! Enjoy the KDX.

Sounds like a great price on the bike! Please do keep us posted on your racing adventures. I just picked up my 220 last month and am waiting on parts so that I can get riding, and then may get a CORCS race or two in this year. I'm sure I will need to do the fork swap since I'm used to riding my CRF450R and it's totally different with this KDX. Welcome to the forum!
