Kdx250 governor

Post by 64tbird »

hey all! :supz: new to the site due to needing help  ! got this basket case 1991 kdx250. got it put together after finding all the missing parts and gaskets and all. never had luck finding the governor lever. everywhere shows unavailable. part number 13168 https://www.kawasakipartshouse.com/oemp ... ine-covers in the attatched pic I believe it goes from the governor down to the stud sticking out from the water pump area but this is the only kdx I have experience with. im a general motors tech. small motors especially oil burners like this or my stihl give me a lotta hell!

kick kick ect and no start not even a hint. desperation sent me to try starting fluid. little at first and tried more than I was comfortable with and still nothing. haven't went thru the carb yet. was hoping I wouldn't have to for a season at least. its getting fuel to the carb- vp pre-mix 40:1. spark to the plug. older plug but didn't look dead. wife verified it was sparking so I don't know what quality of spark but it has something. if it wasn't for not having this governor (power valve?) lever I would look more into spark or already have a carb kit on its way. but will this governor lever issue cause a no start? anyone have a lever and maby that lower cover they wanna sell? as far as I can see that's all that I need to go have some fun!

Welcome to kdxrider.net.

13168 is only a reference number. The part number is 13168-1442.

It is not related to a start / no-start situation.

That makes sense! I tried that number as well and no luck so will verify good spark and probably pull the carb out! Any threads or tips for carb mods or replacement/upgrade carb? I'm in Colorado so 6200 ft and will ride between that and 9k so don't have much air! Guy I got it from rejetted it back when he had it running and said it ran great but would rather spend the money now to do it for good

Is everything else in proper order? Exact jetting seems like something to be worked on after it is running fairly well.

Kinda my thought. The bike sat in a shed for a few years with the carb wrapped up in a plastic bag. It looked ok but just a bit of ethanol could gum it up pretty bad. The first few kicks I believe the governor was pulled out all the way so would have had the valves set for high rpm I believe. Pushed it in and still nothing. I believe all else is good. Governor, electronics and carb are the only things I haven't been thru. I will look more into spark first and report back! Do these have an on/off kill switch? All I can find is a momentary push button near the clutch handle.

Basket case bike, what are the compression and leakdown numbers? It needs to be mechanically sound, with intake free of air leaks (cracks in boots, reeds good, etc). Clean the carb...twice...to start. If it won't fire off on starting fluid I'd be looking at compression first. Have you pulled the flywheel cover and checked the coils?

There's one bolt on arm on ebay for kx 1988. Then later one's seem to be wielded straight onto shaft. So your have to split clutch case to fit . Or grind wielding off and re drill hole .. your notice shaft is tapperd where arm mounts on, and arm mount hole is tapperd to .
