Throttle stuck WIDE OPEN today

Post by Gotanubike »

Long story short, my f*%#ing throttle slide stuck wide open at a pretty fast pace down a straight at the track today. My fight or flight took over and I bailed without even thinking to hold the killswitch or pull the clutch. First time its ever happened. Shoulder was dislocated for a few minutes and eventually felt it pop back in the correct position. Just some pulled/strained tendon in my shoulder cause it hurts like heck...

Has Anyone else had this happen to them and their pwk35? I'm positive it's not the cable issue as the throttle has a good amount of "snap" return to it. Almost felt as if the amount of airflow coming into the motor at those revs was enough to suspend the spring and slide from returning. Tried returning throttle grip to idle positions and toggling the throttle a bit and pretty much just freaked out and bailed off the left side...

Not a scratch on the KDX obviously

Happened to me, riding through fast whoops in the trails. Scary as heelllll, I can say that. Seems to me that if a bit (very little bit) of water gets in the needle, it keeps the needle from dropping back down.

I read that about the water on the needle. Track was dry as a bone though! I had my helmet cam on at the time I'll try and upload a video tomorrow

Is the hard plating on the slide coming off? I suppose if the slide journals are worn enough it could jam. At any rate, glad to hear you're ok.

Yes actually after I looked a bit closer earlier tonight I found the chrome plating on the bottom flat side was coming off with some burr along the edge. Forgot to mention that. I think I'll be purchasing a new one

Throttle stuck WIDE OPEN today

Post by osobad »

you are very lucky . I had a trottle on my Ktm 300 stick wide open in tight woods whith woops. I was grapping for cluth , kill switch and all. I did not panic so much it just happened so fast. Well when the bike hit the nasty whoops it completley bucked me off into a pine tree. Bike just had a bent barkbuster, me not so lucky. Lacerated kidney, liver ,and spleen. 3 broken ribs, 2 broken vert in my back. Punctured lung and a broken pelvis. It acutaly hit so hard it broke a peice of the pelvis off. Doctors said it should have shattered it. I got up and was going to ride the bike back to the parking area but my buddies wouln't let me and then I started to feel it. Ambulance ride to Hospital, 7days in ICU , 15 Days in Hospital and I still ride. They thought I would be in for 2 months when I was brought in to ER . Just pig headed I guess. Was told what happened to me would be like jumping out of a PIck Up into a cement wall at 45-50 mph. It still is and prob always will be in the back of my mind of it happening again. Mine was faulty cable which I guess the KTMs are known for. Gotta be careful make sure you find out what the issue is.

Many of the search results from thumpertalk on "throttle stuck open" were that KTM cable issue so I was already reading about that! Yikes...that sounds terrifying

Here's a short clip of the crash. I  'd pretty hard at the end of the day when I checked the footage and found the ZOOM was on FULL the whole day. So all the footage is no good really. We did some trails and stuff to warm up and planned on making a few videos. Video also cut short due to excessive swearing..

I did manage to get some pretty decent footage of my brother on his 250r before we called it a day

I had a throttle stick open once, found that when I had changed bars I put the front brake and the headlight switch in the wrong position and the big part of the grip on the throttle side was dragging on the brake handle enough to keep the slide from snapping shut when I got off the throttle...grabbed a handful, then got off the gas but the slide stayed open  ended with a bent subframe and a reason to finally build my hybrid lol
