Scott's Rear Shark Fin - I need one, anyone selling?

Post by Curly »

Anyone have one for sale or know anyone or shop selling them? I can’t find them anywhere.
Checked with Scott's a few times over the past 10 months, they may make some but keep pushing the production date if they do make them.
I'm in Colorado, we have tons of granite rock fields. Been lucky so far.
2001 KDX 220, bought 8/10/22 from original owner, still had factory tires. Now ported, milled head, bored carb and revalved/sprung suspension.

2004 KDX 200 - Sold

I bought the Devol Racing KDX skid plate and rear disc guard for mine. It’s maybe not as sexy as the Scott’s machined fin, but it’s done a great job for me in our rough and rocky Appalachian mountain terrain here in Virginia and West Virginia. Their stuff is usually in-stock and also isn’t prohibitively expensive.

I waited almost a year for my Scott's shark fin. I paid and waited. Great communication from this company & I am very happy with the product.
Overall it was worth the wait.
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Well I just went to Devol's site for one to hold me over till Scott's makes them but Devol is on back order as well.
I did find one on Amazon so I got it. If Scots end up making them I'll likely get one and move the Devol to the wifes KDX, she just rides fire roads.

The Scotts is very nice, I've got one.

Bummer they're out of them and not sure if/when they'll make more. I was planning to buy another for my other 220 that I'm rebuilding... I was looking at it to maybe machine a DIY version, but it's a complex piece that'd require A LOT of labor hours to duplicate on an old school manual milling machine...

The Devol rear rotor guard isn't showing up on their website when selecting a 2000 model KDX...

EDIT - it comes up if you search a 2006 though...

Devol is a really good company to work with. They sponsor our VCHSS races here in Virginia and have great customer service. I’m planning on adding their radiator guards next.

I've got two sets of their radiator guards, one for each 220. Definitely very nice pieces.
I'll probably pick up one of their rotor guards for the front and two for the rear.
I need to look and see if those are a universal fit rotor guard or if they are very model specific. It looks like they just slip around the axle on the inside a fork leg, between the bearing spacer and the fork lug. I won't be running it on a stock KDX fork, running KLX300 forks currently, soon switching to '98 RM125 forks, also have a nice 97-04 KX500 for that I may or may not use ever. They mount the way it appears, the only difference would be axle diameter hole, in which case I would need a 20mm.

My issue with not seeing the rear rotor guard when searching 1995-2000 models brought up another question.

The Devol rear rotor guard only shows up for 2001-2006 KDX rear brakes. I recall seeing a similar puzzling detail when looking at the generic Amazon green anodized aluminum rear caliper guards, they were only listed for half of the H-series KDX years.

This leaves me wondering if there was a difference in the caliper's external dimensions especially seeing both the generic Chinese Amazon pieces and the Devol rear rotor guards listing only half of the H-series???

Of course this might be chalked up to the common issue of aftermarket manufacturers not having correct interchange info listed in their compatibility, which is all too common, even with highly reputable companies.

I just went to the ScottsOnline.com site, found that it allows me to put one of these into my shopping cart and likely purchase it, but based on the comment above, it sounds like that is more of a pre-order without telling you it's a pre-order with no date of arrival estimated....
I'm wondering if they require a certain amount of orders in order to make a batch?

I emailed them about it to find out the availability myself, more so just to show them that there is additional interest in purchasing these.

A KDX may no longer be justifiably called the best woods bike of all time with all of the current offerings from the last decade or two, but it certainly was in the 1990's, and luckily there are so many of them out there still due to their high production numbers, that they are still a very viable woods bike with a decent amount of aftermarket support still. A fork swap and some tweaks and they stand up totally fine next to all the modern bikes....
Hopefully Scotts will make another batch 🤞
The Devol guards will make do otherwise...

My order was a pre order. They waited until they had enough to make a production run. They did not charge my card until shipped.
Really a nice piece.

It looks like we ordered ours during the same batch run a few years ago - Scott's Rear Shark Fin (order one while you can) Maybe if there's enough folks requesting these, they might make another batch.

If anyone else wants one, let me know, I wouldn't mind doing a pre-order.

They have them in stock currently for those of you still looking. Ordered one Saturday night and got a shipping notification from FedEx today.

I ordered one based on this. It was delivered, I just haven't been home to see my 2nd of these beautiful works of art yet. The '99 220 rebuild & everything else has gotten quite delayed due to family priorities.
