Looking to make my KDX220 street legal in Maine to get from trail to trail etc... Need a high/low beam headlight, brake and blinkers. I believe I also need a battery.

What's worked for you guys?

I used a Baja Designs kit. It had everything I needed. It has a battery in the headlight shell. I’ve had it on my XR for at least fifteen years. It’s been pretty reliable.

Tusk offers a less expensive kit but I don’t know if it has a battery.

Nice XR. I had a 86 Yamaha TT600 that was plated. Big bore thumpers are very capable. I rode tons of single track and sandy whooped out trails with that bike.

It’s the only bike I’ve ever owned that I can come into a sandy whoop section way faster than my skill level allows and it will never get unsettled and start swapping. Sometimes it makes me look like I know what I’m doing. lol

I also use the Baja designs. It has worked well. Battery is about size of card deck.
I did do a little custom wiring on headlight so that it runs off the bike like normal and then ground high or low thru the switch to make aftermarket headlight go hi & low. So battery lasts a long time.
I have ended up doing a lot more MX track riding than street riding, but it does work. I have replaced the battery 1x, but do not know how long old one was there.

So you run the headlight off the stock KDX wiring but the tail/brake light and blinkers off the battery? I hadn't even thought of that as a way to increase effective battery life! In that case the Tusk kit would be a good choice. It doesn't come with a headlight but I like the way the blinkers, esp the rear, mount up.

Thanks Doak!
Correction: I have the Tusk kit.
Yes headlight is wired from normal bike power and then I used the Tusk switch for Hi/Lo/Off on the ground side of the headlights. Goes against my proper design philosophy. But works good.
The battery charge seems to last ages. But must admit I don’t really use it much.

I’d also give tusk thumbs up for still working. I pretty much beat the tar out of my bike, and lights keep working. I am tempted to remove the lights (at least rear) since I am always dragging back end on something and crushing the plate, to see if I’d miss them. But my tabs are still good, and it works as a fender protector.

The battery is mounted with tape on Velcro & zip.

All right! You got me. I’ve been saving the new one until I really needed it. I’ll add it to the prep list for Sunday.

I wouldn’t use my lights too often either. Just want to do some dual sport rides but most of my riding hasn’t required lights.

I still have some intent of maybe some forest roads or similar. And these require a street legal plate. But so far haven’t done that.

Looking into it a little more myself there is a company called trick dualsport. Another option.

Man! You guys are rough. When he’s not be-smirking my maintenance, Satan’s Little Helper is 90-lbs of don’t mess with mommy. Instead of me getting another dirt bike, he got his grill fixed.

Thanks for the info Goat! My 220 has a plate, but I haven't gotten around to fitting a light kit yet.

Not sure, how it happened but that tooth had a fractured off the outer layer. We live in the sticks so no telling what he got hold of. My daughter was visiting and noticed something red in his mouth and it was veins (?) of his tooth. So it was either pull it or spend a motorbike to fix it. Man, what a grumpy ass Richard he was, until it got fixed. He acted like a pissed-off kid, looking for excuse to swing. Now he’s happily back to inspecting my work and politely asking visitors to wait in their car.
