Top-end advice

Post by ConWasabi »

I just picked up a 2005 200 yesterday. The bike seams to run pretty good, I scoped the top-end this morning and am looking for some seasoned advice.

- advice on condition / possible cause of damage/wear?

That looks about great to me. How is the compression?
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

looks good between 145 & 150. that scuffing around the outside of piston near the intake had me concerned.

looks like something happend in the past up top, likely the PO reused the piston afterwards. Good compression and no issues with the plating IIWM I'd ride it.

looks like some preignition / detonation on top of the piston

also looks like someone hit the piston top with a wire brush

I'd take it apart if it was mine

At least take the pipe off and look inside

Good advice, everything looks good to me, the only questionable pic is the skirt side of chamber. would love to know what your thoughts are on it where the arrow is pointing.

What is the black stuff between the cylinder and head?!

1. Get a service manual.
2. Take it apart (paying close attention to the left hand thread nut on the advancer shaft, which could be held with a wrench while the nut is removed)
3. Report back.

Looks like some type of sealant was used on the head gasket.
Might be what's on the piston too.
