Finally got to ride

Post by qbury »

I finally got a chance to ride my new to me 2002 KDX200. This has been some journey thanks to COVID and the CA DMV system. It's taken over 2 months for me to get my paperwork from DMV. The wait has been excruciating and expensive.(See below)
I bought the bike from the original owner who was an older gentleman but it hadn't been ridden in about 2 years. The bike was in amazing condition and had been well taken care of. It still had the original tires on it in decent shape. That said, after sitting for as long as it did it needed maintenance.

Here's what I did while waiting:

Rebuilt the forks with new seals and bushings and did the shim stack mod. New Race Tech springs sprung for my weight.
Rebuilt the rear shock with a new bladder, seal head, piston band. (Thank you Jason for the parts). New Race Tech spring sprung for my weight.
New wheel bearings
Cleaned and greased the suspension bearings
New steering head bearings
Re-plated cylinder from Millennium
FMF Gnarly Woods Pipe
New Wiseco Piston
Rebuilt the front and read master cylinders
New pads front and rear
Kenda Track Master Tires - Front and Rear w/3mm Tubes front and rear
New sprockets and o-ring chain
Fredette Chain Guard
New Renthal bars - (Only because they came with the sale. The ones on it were it perfect condition).
Devol Radiator guards
Hyde Skid Plate
Tusk Hand Guards
ODI Lock on grips
New front brake lever
New Clutch lever and perch
Motion pro throttle and clutch cables
Other -Engine Ice, oil, air filter

I don't have a baseline to compare because I didn't ride the bike while waiting for the paperwork. I previously came from the 250 world, 2 and 4 stroke, with the exception of the DRZ400 that I owed to try Dual Sporting. I am really impressed with the power delivery of this 200. Mind you I'm still doing break-in and haven't pushed it to it's limit yet but what I feel is a bike that likes to run. No it's not a 250 but I really wanted to take a step down in power as I age. But this bike can sneak up on you if your not careful, yet it's very linear and easy to control.
Regarding the suspension, again I don't have a base to go by but it seems to handle pretty good for what I'vd done so far. I hit some small jumps and and some real rocky areas but did not experience any bottom out or twitching. It also seemed to go where I pointed it. I think the tires have a lot to do with that as well. The jury is still out on the suspension. I have set of KLX forks waiting in the wings but I'm not in a hurry to install them yet. I just want to ride for now. That may make a good winter project if I decide to change them out
Hopefully I can get back out in the next couple of days.

Yeah i can see how people fall in love with them. Once you get them right it's just the routine maintenance.
