JD kit in a 220 0-3000' Southeastern USA thread

Post by Twinsig »

For future historic record:
Middle Bama 70° 50% hum
2003 kdx 220
Brand new wossner & millennium plated top.
Stock everything else except snorkel delete..
40/145 stock needle top clip

JD kit: (After step one, I knew step 2 was gonna be rich and unneccessary so this is NOT the order per JD instructions)
1) 42/155, red-4th clip. Rich, no idle, plug foul.
2) 42/155 blue-3rd clip. Same.
3) 40/150 stock needle 2nd clip (idles like before, might be lean on top, maybe) So it's back to "almost".

Will begin testing tmrw with JD needles & plug chops. TBC....

Unfortunately the very first thing I did was installed the Red on clip 3 & rounded this nut. And it won't come out! I tried a 5.5 mm & heat, no luck. So im stuck with it for now. Dam it! No needle swapping today. :toimonster:

Just when you were ready for a day of tuning. What a bummer! Off hand I can't remember how far down that is in the slide. Would the tip of a small vice grip fit down in there? Probably not. That thing just needs to be snug.

In the meantime I would try that main jet chop again. Something didn't come out right. The lighter section that's below your color line is what should be showing the color. Not that thin of a line and not that high up. The color itself would be great if that were at the bottom of the insulator.

Check out this picture which is main jet chops from rich to lean. It would run great on the 4th plug but If there was one in between the 4th and 5th that was a little smaller and cardboard colored, that would be the one.

Shoot for a color line like this one on the main jet. That middle white section would show color during a 1/2 throttle needle chop, and the top brown section is the pilot.

Thanks for the pics bro. Very helpful. I need to find a longer road, my street is not going to cut it... but im glad I didn't drive somewhere else just top bung-up that nut!

Red on clip 3 ran spoogy down low had to burn it out often.

Next is Blue on clip 3 when I get parts.

Dang boys, sure has been a crazy year!
Have barely touched the lil-green-machine. Still haven't progressed ANY since the last post. Way too busy but I'm still hanging around the forum now and then. Spending cyber time on the firing line forum mostly, and honing my sporting-goods skills.
Looking forward to some cooler weather and get back on it!
Be safe out there!

Get a "Bolt Out" or whatever they call it that cuts into the head to get it out.

You are not the first to round that off. You won't be the last. Six-point is the way to go. Besides torquing the cylinder nuts with the Motion Pro torque adapter, I don't think any other fastener needs a 12-point tool to touch it.

I had that same problem with rounded bolt, took it to a machine shop, they couldn't get it out and just gave up, I got a smaller hex socket and hammered it on, it came loose instantly

Oh dude. I neglected to include the fact that i did fix that cable deal..and bought an extra just for fun..
Also, part of this update didn't include the torn left-elbow tendon diagnosis.
12 weeks (from cut to cured) that I just don't have time to schedule right now. Dang-it man!

I hate the design of that cable holder. Had the cable come out 2x and finally bought a new one. Def something to look at when restoring a KDX. Sorry bout the elbow.

At the least, get a "tennis elbow" band. It helped mine a lot when I landed rear wheel first and almost got the handlebars yanked from my hand / arm separated at the elbow. Eight years later, and mine on occasion will still give me trouble at times, now and then.

Update. After many months!
My carb has pilot circuit probs. I'm ready to shelve it and buy an RB. Hopefully.

What slide are you running, I had to grind mine to a number 7 and it made a huge difference, I also have a 220 and used the red needle and it was so rich it wouldn't idle, a few suggestions
Make sure the airbox lid is on and snorkel inserted, when you modify the airbox it becomes less efficient at low rpm and runs rich
The number 5 slide is way too rich, modify to a 6 or 7
Use e10 fuel, that will lean it out
I went back to the 1173 needle and if you can find one try 1174 both are thicker on the straight diameter than the red needle
Set the float level to 18 or 19mm
Be aware that the emulsion tube wear is critical and not visible with the naked eye so if it's worn by just 0.02mm then no needle changes will fix it unless you were to solder up the straight diameter and machine it down to 2.78mm which I did
There are a couple of people on here that will disagree with me no matter what I say but my suggestion are valid especially for altitude and higher temperatures
I also have the rb carb and the jetting it came with and suggestions were so far off my bike wouldn't idle or run properly, I ended up going back to a 33mm carb

Dazz. Thanks for the info.
Slide is stock, 5 I suspect?
Snorkel is gone though.
I'm going to reverse the jetting to stock, run some 32:1 (40:1 now) and check it with the 38 & 40 pj's.
Really wierd though. Seems nobody runs a 38 at 600>sea level.
It's all a nice distraction at the moment!

The pilot jet size is directly related to the straight diameter especially at idle, I was down to a 32 pilot jet with the jd red needle, I cut the slide to a number 7,that allowed me to use a number 35 pilot, but my point is if the emulsion tube is worn or the straight diameter is wrong, you will never find the right size pilot jet, do you have an 1173 or 1174 to try

Update:
Went 32:1 mix, 38 pj, red JD on clip 2.
Idle is dead on!
Pilot Air screw 1-3/4 out
0-1/4 throttle is dead on!
Small blip at 3/4 throttle.
I'll do some main plug chops Friday and get that right.
After, it's needle position mostly. Right?
I'm pumped bro!
