Pipe guards

Post by javjacob »

I got a FMF Gnarly desert pipe on my KDX220R and am wanting to get a pipe guard for it. Not sure which one to get though. Looking at the Flatland Racing and Moose. The Flatland is supposed to be custom fitted but doesn't specify if it works with my FMF. I even called and they didn't know. Having a hard time deciding which one to get or if there is anything better.
I don't mind some fitting but want good coverage and a solid mount.

Well? Are you going to link us or show pics of the product?

I figure there would be some guys on here who have used pipe guards. Thought this was the place for KDX advice and there is pretty much no info doing a google search. A search on pipe guards would make you think KTM is the only bikes made.

Think I will just try the Flatland racing pipe guard and find out first hand.

I called and they said if I send my pipe they will custom made a guard but the shipping cost wouldn't be worth it I wouldn't think. I never did compare my FMF to my stock pipe when I had it. The Moose on the other hand is just a universal guard that has to be modified to fit. I would think the Flatland would be a closer fit but I could be wrong.

I use the Tusk pipe guard from Rocky Mountain ATV its not a carbon fiber or heavy metal one but it works pretty good. It's on the cheap side.

Hyde still has pipe guard/skid plate combos

Willbilly, Thanks for the references. I have a Tusk guard on one of my bikes. But I didn't know what brand it is. I was considering building one. But, at $25 I'll buy another Tusk.

I might be interested but I don't think I really want to mod to fit which is my main draw back on the Moose guard. I am leaning towards buying the Flatland guard and hopefully it either fits or requires minimal mods to fit. I also like how the Flatland guard has a groove for the band, looks more secure. I will let you know if I decide against the Flatland guard, if you still have it then.

It's not the same thing. It has guides cut to keep the bands secure and they are pre bent to be bolt on and go. The time and frustration saved is easily worth an extra $40. I can make more than that working 1 hour of overtime. I can see the Moose guard taking longer than that to get bent into shape then having to go to the store and search for hose clamps everyone talks about in the reviews and that will cost a few dollars at minimum. It cost more because you get more. Whether it's worth it or not is up to the individual buyer.

I got the Ricochet one and it really wasn't that hard to put on. There were enough clamps, it's pretty thick aluminum but I bent it easily by hand, it fits nice, I've dropped it on the rocks several times with no damage. I like it. https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/p/90 ... ipe-Guard-

KDX pics are always welcome!

I ended up getting the Flatland racing guard. It didn't fit so I called them and they said it was built off the FMF pipe. I assume it was the woods pipe though and I have the desert. They said to send it back with my pipe and they will make one specifically for my pipe and ship it back for free so I shipped it today. Shipping was cheap for me since they are only about 70 miles or so from me. I will post pics when I get it back.

O that's really cool of them. Sounds like you may be helping them add another product offering... they should give you a free one for that!
