Gear Valve Question

Post by king_tutt »

I got a question, so i decided to totally tear down the engine of my 2005 kdx 220 and when taking apart the KIPS assembly I broke the valve gear. I know the part number is 16085-1274 and i found it for 70 ish bucks on bike bandit, but i am wondering since I only broke one tooth off towards the end if I really need a new one

Yes, if you broke a tooth off the gear, it must be replaced. Reason being is that gear is constantly spinning with the engine. It could possibly jam causing even more damage.

I thought it only spun when a certain rpm was reached which then allows the valves to open causing the powerband to kick in?

If it was the last tooth you might get away with it. That gear cycles back and forth (doesn't spin) as the KIPS opens and closes. You could dry assemble the KIPS and cycle it by hand to see if the tooth is in the engagement region. If its not the last tooth I would guess that it is getting engaged and would need to be replaced lest you end up damaging the gear more and possibly the rod/subvalve

Ok, I think I must have misunderstood you. I'm thinking of the KIPS governor. Oops.
