Place the ring down 10mm or so inside the cylinder. Measure the gap with feeler gauge(s).

You can place the piston with the old rings inside the cylinder to have something onto which to "square" the ring up. Alternatively, just measure at a couple different places to make sure that the ring is the same depth down in the cylinder.
