Water Pump shaft O-rings???

Post by Ecarta »

Dear KDXers ,
Does the waterpump shaft have 1 or 2 O-rings?
I remember putting the larger on last year only because I found it on my workbench during reassembly. (See pic) It fits perfectly in that groove and provide a seal against the back side of the bearing.

However, I cannot see any documentation/photo that it should be there. Service Manual has one grainy photo that is so bad I cannot determine if it's there or not. The parts diagram on RMMC and Motosport is inaccurate. Youtube doesn't really have any good documentation, that I can find. The article here on KDXRIDER.NET does not mention it.

Every photo on eBay only has the smaller O-ring. The Vertex water pump rebuild kit does not have a large O-ring but it really seems like it should though.

Anyway let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!

For which bike? I looked at parts diagrams for the E and H series bikes, and couldn't find an O ring under the impeller on either one. Now I'm curious, I just did a water pump rebuild, and the kit had a small O ring in it, but I couldn't find mention of it in the parts diagram, or in the service manual, so I never used it. Seems it would smoosh out as you torqued down the impeller nut.

Yup, you're right. I had to look at the pic again and realized he wasn't talking about the seal but that o-ring where the impeller mounts. Yeah, that doesn't belong there.

My memory is a little vague in this but that looks correct, should be a small o ring under the impeller but I also remember questioning why it was there

Well, son of a bitch would you look at that! Looks like I'll be pulling mine back apart!

Surprised it doesn't appear in the parts fiche.

Slick Nick: bike is an H (2004)

So the only o-ring that should be present is the small one where the impeller goes? Is that correct?

Therefore the large one (in my pic) near the gear should be removed?

Yes, one o-ring only. Is that part closest to the gear just a rubber o-ring? It looks almost like part of the waterpump seal.

That piece next to the gear on that shaft shouldn't be there. The shaft goes through a bearing, an oil seal, and then the water pump mechanical seal. The little O-ring on the end of the shaft sits under the impeller and should be there.

Ss109,
Not sure where the larger O-ring came from...saw it laying on my workbench when I last had this apart and I "ASS-umed" it went on the shaft cuz there is a grove machined into the shaft thar it fits into perfectly. Thanks for clarification!

Thank you Buftester for this clarification! Now maybe I can get this thing back together!
