Kdx 220 acting up

Post by JZ05220r »

I was riding in a field today and all of a sudden the 220 starting acting up. The exhaust note changed and it was more raspy and the power was very rough. I rode alittle longer questioning it. The plug was all white except for a dark 3mm ring on the bottom. What caught me off guard was the ground strap had a powdery white finish on it. Almost 3/4 of the way to the ring of the plug. It looked like it was running lean on the pilot and needle so I freaked out and put a 48 (from 45) and dropped the clip to the 3rd position to richen things up. I put a new plug in and it was normal again for the first 5-10 minutes. Then it started to happen again. The engine also cooled off a little bit before I put the new plug in. I’m not sure if the engine is overheating or what. I just want to have fun!!!!

Go through and verify everything is as it should be. In other words, check fluid levels, check proper carb operation, do a leakdown test, etc until you figure out where the problem is.

Gas if flowing just fine but is their actually a built in fuel filter in the petcock? My carb holder clamp was actually half in its grove and half completely out of the groove when I tightened it down. That could be it but it came on suddenly which was odd.

I’m going to have to make a homemade leak down tester. I also don’t have the right pump to add pressure once that’s said and done. The carb holder clamp was actually way off from where it should’ve been as I just had the v force 3s installed aand it was dark for reassembly. Still odd regardless.

yes the filters sit on the petcock assembly inside the tank.
the tank vent tube could be acting up also.

This is an easy to make leakdown tester. Everything is from Ace Hardware except the blood pressure bulb. Instead of the bulb you can just install a shrader valve and then fill it up with a tire pump. I would use a handheld and not a compressor to fill it up. You have to take off your carb and pipe.
Put the tester in the carb boot and the plug in the cylinder where the pipe mounts and crank everything down. 5psi for 5 minutes (or 6 for 6) with no loss is what you're after.
Edit: I just saw a post from SS and that reminded me....take your radiator cap off while doing the test to make sure you don't have any bubbles showing up there.

Hey that’s awesome I have thought about that but I think I’m going to just order a motion pro tester. Am I crazy for wanting to spend 280 dollars? I will be tinkering a lot in my future so I think that justifies it for me.
