Today's KDX Cost? May 2022...

Post by HartleyDog »

I am an old guy. I bought a KDX 175 in the 80's for $700.

I found a 2003 KDX 220 R, like new this week for $3600 !!!!
Yes, it is stock, like new. No mods or "Monster" stickers!

I would think only a few rides on this Jewel?

What is the "R" for???

I am shocked by the price !!! But I since new like ones are Rare, Maybe it is going to go fast.

And Old Fool and His $ will be parted!

I never see any for sale, this one is Rare!
Thanks

I have a fully modded 2003 KDX220R, I spent over 1000 dollars on mods. I would not buy a KDX220R for 3600, even if it is excellent shape. Buy a Yamaha 125, or 250. They have good low end, and they are a blast on top. BUT, the KDX's are unique bikes, so thats why I got mine. The forks on the front are extremely limiting so just add about 500 bucks to that 3600 dollars and you will have a better experience. I got mine in good condition for 2700, it was in excellent shape with nothing needed. If you are going to spend 3600 on a bike, I would not buy a KDX, but they are fun bikes that can do basically anything with the right mods. The "R" means nothing.

If it truly was like new (say less than 10 hours) I would take that over any brand new bike that costs 3600. That’s KLX 140 and YZ 65 money I believe. It’s less than a crf or ttr 230 and I’d much rather have the KDX with money to spare over one of those. A like new YZ 125 or 250 would be much more.

KDX220R is the "whole name" or proper marketing name. People just shorten it to "KDX220".

When looking at any bike, compare what else you can get for the same money. It's a unique model, so if it fits ones needs, it may be worth the extra money to get one. I'd have to see what $3,500 worth of used Yamaha WR250F or used Honda CRF250F looks like.

I have a 03 KDX220R. Bought it brand new. I keep it in "like new" condition & it stays inside the house. This is the best running, fun to ride bike I have ever had. It's not for sale, but I don't think I would sell it for less than $3500.

I've done the RB head & carb mod, airbox lid removal, modified stock pipe (I used a plasma torch to cut the back half of the pipe out. Removed the sound dampening inside that's spot-welded in. I tig welded it back together.) I also have a FMF pipe hanging on the wall just in case.

I have a spare 220 cylinder that I bought from a guy off this site. I sent that to Jeff Fredette for porting, and it is at Millenium Technologies right now getting replated w/ a new Wiseco piston. Jeff runs a turnkey operation. I just sent him the cylinder and my CC number, and he is going to return it ready to bolt on. I might have to look at it for a while before I install it.

I think the KDX is a worthy bike, and I would pay a little extra for a nice one, and pay to keep it nice.
If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Sounds kinda ok to me if you want a stock pristine bike.
And it saves lots of little projects. Maybe save you from having to replace the carb and every bearing on the bike, like mine needed. Bearings aren’t expensive but it’s fair amount of time.
I just don’t know if anyone else would buy it back off you at that price, if you needed to flip it.

Its a tough call,I paid $4200 Canadian out the door for a leftover new 02 in 03, I think in like new with low hrs that one would have sold many times over here, sure this is almost a 30 year old bike, not the latest and greatest in electric start, oil/fuel injection, adjustable power valves and throttle curves, high tech suspension. I was offered $4000Can less then 2 months ago from the local dealer when I had my bike in the truck while picking up a part there for my friends son . What would I replace it with of equal performance there for less the +$4000,nothing, could buy something used for what I got for mine not knowing the history and how much $$ to get it up to snuff?, what I see in the classifieds here for that price I wouldn't waste my time on.
Look at your local areas classifieds and see what $3600 might buy, maybe close to a new 4 stroke 230,a newer well used 250 2 or 4 stroke not knowing the history, what it night need. The 220 is recommended to replace the piston if it has not been done, under $200 with gaskets and would give it a good greasing from front to back.Nothing wrong with the stock suspension once set up for you, I have a KLX300usd set up on mine with Gold Valves but got it for next to nothing 20yrs ago.
My little 220 gives up nothing to the newer bikes in the tight or open trails around here, starts easy, runs clean, never fouled a plug since I've owned it, handles well for what we ride and has a very comfortable seat and seat height, is reliable as anything I have owned, as long as parts are available its a keeper.. it still gets the job done..

My son bought a few 4 strokes. I've spent some time riding them, sizes from 250 to 500.
I'll always stick with my 2 strokes.
