Stock header material?

Post by Isgc »

Hey guys, I had a question. What material is the stock expansion header made out of? Is it normal steel or is it stainless? I stripped the paint off because I like the shiny pipes but I don't want it to rust.

The stock pipe is standard carbon steel and will rust without some kind of coating to protect it. You could probably have it ceramic coated in a fake chrome but it would cost more than an aftermarket pipe. If you really want shiny get a PC or FMF pipe.

This is how my pipe turned out. Made a custom name plate as well. Still undecided if I want to redo the coloring or not because I wanted more of the blue coloring, but this is what it looks like.

A lot of people in the Yamaha RD community use Mop&Glo on their bare steel expansion chambers, never tried it myself though.

Looks almost like one of the factory racing pipes. How did you get it to blue?

Yeah, that was the look I was trying to go for. I started by stripping the paint off, sanding the pipe starting at 100 grit up to 600. I got it to blue by using a propane torch along the pipe seams and welds. Also, to get that bluish purple on the section closer to the inlet, I let a heat gun run blowing through the inlet of the pipe. Also was able to burn out all of the baked up carbon that has been in there since 1993 🤣

Awesome. I was curious if it was just old school heat or you did some other kind of magic. Thanks for the info!
