Jetting help

Post by Isgc »

Hello. Recently I have been trying to figure out my jetting situation. Let me first state, I have basically no experience with jetting. My bike has been running pretty rich. Spooges and fouls plugs. Bike is a 1993 KDX200. My current specs are as follows:

48 pilot

150 main

R1173N needle in 4th clip pos

Air screw 1-1/2 turns out

50:1 Motul 710 at 91 octane

NGK BR9ES plug

Elevation 250m (827ft) above sea level.

Temps range from 20-30°C (68-86°F)

Bike is completely stock with stock exhaust and reeds.

I did a bit of reading and many people recommend a 45 pilot and a 155 main at 32:1 for the kdx200's. Does the 155/45 at 32:1 sound about right for my info? Any help is appreciated.

Which pipe?

Which spark arrestor / silencer?

Assuming everything is working proerly:

NGK BR8ES

45 pilot

#4 from the top? move to middle (lower needle into hole)

reevaluate

Normally, I preach one at a time, but not this time.

Main may need a bump

Pipe and silencer are stock. Clip pos is #4 from top. I also misread the needle, it is an R1172N

Swap to an "8" heat range BR8ES.

Try a 45.

Move the needle clip to the middle.

Should I keep with 50:1 or switch to 32:1?

Oil ratio is determined by the oil manufacturer. Not by Kawasaki. 50:1 is fine.

So I picked up a 45 and a 42 pilot. Going to try the 45 first and see how she runs. Also grabbed a couple br8es plugs as well

There really is no good alternative to following the PWK jetting procedure, as Keihen published it IMO. Start with making sure the bike is mechanically sound, then fresh filter, new (BR8) plug, fresh fuel mix using your preferred oil and ratio, then set the Air Screw to determine the correct pilot, then work up from there. Everything else depends on the proper pilot and a mechanically sound intake/exhaust. You will gain a better understanding of what jetting changes do to the bike in different throttle regions, how your specific bike reacts (all are different). That becomes your baseline so that ANY changes (pipe, silencer, fuel octane, oil type/ration) can be accommodated easily. All that said, your pilot sounds too large and start on clip position 3 as stated above to get you started, then follow the jetting guide.

Float level? Is the needle sealing?

At your altitude a stock bike should run pretty well. To develop a baseline it might pay off to set everything to factory settings.
