1989 kdx200 linkage question

Post by harvesters01 »

Looking for a little direction on what the final link assembly is supposed to look like and wondering if there should be some sort of spacers where I am pointing in the picture. Seems without them there would be to much slop left to right?

Forgive a former powder coater with over 1,000,000 parts coated, but just how thick do you have the paint / powder on that frame??

Pn 39007 doesn't look the same as mine ...does it have a wider section on the end pivot point? If this is a wrong part, then my shock is wrong as well..or at least the connection is.

Frame was stripped and powder coated locally..but to answer your question yes, something looks odd there for sure....not sure I will go grinding the area to find out though. 😀

Lol...awesome!

Makes me wonder how they managed to get it together at all!

Bought this bike for $125 and the typical basket case. Thought I was done buying parts but I guess not.

Thank you for pointing this newbie in the right direction

If anyone has a linkage a shock they want to part with, let me know!

Looks like the linkage was correct but they modified it to fit the non-KDX shock. Weird.

I think that is from a 1986 KX125... let's go to Partzilla for the call...

yeah, I think so. I thought it was a 1988 KX link from the early pics, but after seeing the shock, that looks like 1985 or so, but 1985 had the big dogbone linkage style . 1986 KX125 had the linkage somewhat like a normal bike.

Look through the parts diagrams on kawasaki.com or preferably partzilla.com. Partzilla has more info, such as parts availability and how many were used on that diagram.

Sorry that it was missing a few things.

Look on eBay for used parts. There are usually some linkages and shocks on there.

$125 is an amazing price. I would buy a dozen.

Looking good so far!

Look through these sections of the bike to make sure what you have matches up with what it is supposed to have. Post questions when you get stumped.

Will the attached shock work with the 1989 kdx200? Part number doesn't appear to be listed under the 89

Hi. The shaft is rusted. That shock is a total piece of junk. I used to work on these for members (15 years ago). I am pretty knowledgeable about them. Please trust me. Pass on that one. Look at picture number 8. The rust can be seen on the shaft. If there is rust on the shaft, the shaft would have to be rechromed. There is no way you are getting that shaft shipped to the chrome plating shop and back for under $150.

If you are hoping to buy one and just bolt it on and go riding, stay far away from that one.

The $199.49 shock has rust on the shaft, too. Rust is like a cheese grater. It will destroy an oil seal as the rust slices through the rubber.

EDIT: I sent them both a polite message. Really, I did! It's not what I thought in my head, but what I typed was surely nice.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Were you able to determine exactly which parts you were missing?

Looks like 39007 suspension arm and the rear shock is what I need.. The suspension rods, 46102 look to be correct. I have a pivot works linkage rebuild kit waiting to be used as well.

Do you have the correct bolts and nuts?

I think the kit has one for the underside of the swingarm, then the two bigger ones for the linkage arm. The smallest bearing in the linkage arm is in the Pivotworks shock kit. If you can swing the price of OEM, then the OEM sleeve and bearing has been reported to last a fair amount longer on that small bearing / sleeve.

You might want to post a "wanted" ad in the classified section. It is toward the bottom the main page of forum listings.
