Kips noise Paranoia!
Just finished up complete engine rebuild. New cases, seals, and bearings. Sent cylinder to be repaired and plated. Also had them clean up the kips while it was there. had crank and bearings replaced and new rod installed. Got it all back together, big thanks to this forum for the help!
Runs great. But damn this thing rattles something terrible! Watched some vids on kips rattle and it helps to ease my mind a little. Not sure how loud this rattle is supposed to be. Seems to almost go away when pulling in the clutch. Makes me think it could be clutch basket or something clutch/ transmission related? Going to drain the oil and check for any shiny bits after it cools down.
I know no one can describe how loud the rattle can or should be. Guess I’m just looking for some reassurance that this thing is ok to run.

Re: Kips noise Paranoia!
Every bike is different, and a lot of it depends on how much wear is on all the individual components. If you can capture on a video and post it you should get lots of feedback.

Can’t seem to post this video. Did a search and still can’t figure out how to do it. Any help would be great! Using iPhone, no home computer.

Hi. The site does not host videos. Donations are doing good to just host pictures. :-)
Look on Youtube for KIPS rattle. You can see what other people's sounds like.

Re: Kips noise Paranoia!
I just watched the video. Take a long screwdriver and put your ear on the handle to use it like a stethoscope. I bet all that noise you’re hearing is from the clutch area. That’s how mine is. There really isn’t any KIPS noise to speak of but a mechanics stethoscope on the clutch actuator or on the shaft at the front sprocket reveal the source is not from the cylinder area. With the clutch in its quiet and with clutch in and in gear there’s no rattle at all.

Re: Kips noise Paranoia!
So is the clutch noise a normal KDX sound? Because the noise on mine (99 KDX 220) does go completely away once the clutch lever is pulled in for a few seconds. And I’ve used a screw driver as was mentioned it is louder around the clutch basket on engine case.

run a full qt of oil in tranny , use at least a 15w40 weight oil , I use Total 10w60 in ours :)

Re: Kips noise Paranoia!
yes the trust bearing on clutch seams to make a little noise also , replace with premium bearing. Dam ball bearings were never designed for much side load

Re: Kips noise Paranoia!
Took it out for the first real ride since the rebuild. Bike ran great, seems to be the perfect bike for my riding style. But Lots of aluminum flake in oil (ATF) changed it twice in 2 hours run time and it doesn’t seem to be getting better. Prob going to pull the clutch basket out and have a look around. Replace and upgrade parts if needed. And will use some 10w-40 Rotella next to see how that works out.
