Headlight upgrade

Haven’t found a kdx just yet but reading up on upgrading the electrical for improved lighting. Enjoyed reading the self rewind thread, very informative. Have seen the rewound stators and coils available to get 80-90w. Planning on going to led lights, but was trying to locate which brand of regulator/rectifier was recommended. Riding at night beats the summertime heat.

I don't know for sure, but I'd look to see if Jeff Fredette offers anything of the sort on his website. I think he hand picks the best products for KDXs to put on his website.

I would also check with FRP (Jeff Fredette) https://www.frpoffroad.com/
I also recommend a battery powered LED light that straps to your helmet so always have light where you are looking. Its also nice if you have to get off the bike or look at something on the bike.

I’ll definitely look up fredette racing, that guy has been around forever winning.
I concur with the helmet lights, I tried a cheap set that failed but yeah getting to see beyond the bikes light beats all.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I saw a recent post (I think by bufftester) that said you can run LEDs without a rectifier, they'll just flicker at low rpms. Just make sure you're good on wattage.

I have tried that on a atv with a similar stator assembly. It didn’t flicker but the led light wasn’t the biggest. Rewinding the lighting coil sounds like a good idea

Thanks for the link, interested in squirrel retina burning lights for sure
When I ran the led on the stock stator on the Suzuki lt500 quadzilla it didn’t flicker at idle when testing.

Thanks it took a little while to find one worth buying, funny how it’s going the same way for the kdx. 2 strokes forever!!

I could do something similar to that, who doesn’t have a extra battery in their garage. How long did your batteries last ?

I decided to go this route. Baja designs with a built in rectifier converting AC to DC for the LED lights. Ran into a situation a few months back where I actually need a headlight and found that my light was inadequate. This LED works great.

The GOOD...It's really bright and you do NOT have to rewind the factory stator
The BAD...It's way too expensive.

WOW. That is bright. Let me ask, though. On the RM page, it says:

"Details
Baja Designs A/C kits allow you to tap in to the factory A/C portion of your lighting coil providing lighting solutions to many bikes without having to modify their stators! In order to run the Squadron Pro A/C kit your bike must have 80 Watts A/C power."

I was all set to do the rewind thinking that it was required. The BD website indicated that it was needed.
https://www.bajadesigns.com/tech-info/S ... -Chart.asp

I then ran across this...

https://thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/12 ... -any-bike/

After much confusion :hmm: I decided to call them directly. They said that the headlight had been upgraded over time and that I would not need the rewind. EDIT>>> I did verify that this was for the Squadron Pro not the Sport>>>I ordered it, installed a waterproof 2 way connector plug, and I'm good with the results. Here is the back side of the light and the plug I got off of amazon...

I just called them. A tech support guy said the lesser Sport model only. ?? How did you get the higher wattage one to work??

Wow...that's exactly the opposite of what they told me. Maybe I was dealing with sales and not tech support and they didn't know. They did get the exact model of the bike and looked something up.

It works, and with a rewound stator maybe I could light up the next county. I do have a LED taillight that has less draw...IDK it just works and works pretty well.

I got mine on ebay Part # 497001WTAC for $269. About $30 cheaper than I found it anywhere else. Thats still cheaper than the entire KLX 450R assembly from Kawasaki that I was considering as an upgrade to the China replica that I had.

OK, either way, it is super bright!

member treelimb has a lime green Polisport regular headlight on his 1997 KDX200. It would be great if Baja Designs could do lime green.

AWESOME LIGHT. Thanks again for the info.
