I am rebuilding the top end on my 1990 kdx 200 and when i was putting the piston in I dropped the circlip in the bottom end. I could not get it out, and I do not want to open the bottom end. Will it be ok if I leave it in there. It is real thin and i think it will get ground up without causing any damage.

i would stop burning bud and think this through, any metal in the crank bearing is bad

if it were me i would try to turn the engine upside down and shake it, or try to flush it out somehow
i would not be comfortable with ANYTHING in there

unless it gets sucked up and stuck between the piston and cylinder LOL

Ill try the upside down idea. I bet I can atleast get it close enough to get with a magnet. I know leaving it there sounds really stupid but I could not get it out.

yeah go ahead and throw in a handful of sand too, that's small enough right, shouldn't hurt anything, SHOULD IT?

you NEED to take it out. Try to flip the bike upside down and flush it with some gas or oil, i can't recall which one. Hopefully someone will chime in and give more advice. (after they give u crap though )

just think what those little bits could do if they made it through the bearings and into the seals

You need to find it!!!! my sons kx100 had one come out scarred the cylinder wall enough to lose compression. I didn't find all of it..well.. a couple hours on a new topend and it locked up..part of the old clip got back up. I learned the hard way

the guy with the rear view mirror is of course depicting the engine of the KDX
the guy who says "i was just buzzed" is our OP who said "It is real thin and i think it will get ground up without causing any damage"

and the paramedics is all of us, who are trying to point out that even though it is a small little doohickey it is still a foreign metal object that found its way into the engine

Wonder what would happen if he stuck a very thin and powerful earth magnet on the crank and just run it around 360 degrees?----think it would pick up the clip and bring it to you? Or would you now have a clip and a magnet stuck down there??? Is there enough room between the bottom of the crank and the case to pass the magnet? Iv'e got an assortment of those earth magnets---some are about as thin as a nickel and powerful enough to stick pretty hard to the crank.

I am not advocating that he try this just yet---just throwing it out as a possibility if all else fails. First thing I'd do is turn the bike upside down on a spread out sheet or blanket (so you can find the clip if it does come out) and blow compressed air up there hoping it would blow the clip free ---and if that didn't work I'd turn the old garden hose with a small nozzle and hose it down while spinning the crank----not the best idea for the lower crank bearing----but a whole lot of WD -40 followed by an oil bath afterwards. Trick is to know the clip came out and find it afterwards---which is the reason for the blanket

Keep trying and trying...you'll get it out...and you must get it out. Lessons are learned this way. You will never do a top end again without having a rag over the crankcase.

thanks for the ideas. I took the motor out and turned it over and I got the clip out. Next time i will use a rag.

antenna magnet wand. Fish around the case and you will find it. I did it once, and I did recover it. Be patient.
