Counter sprocket leak

Post by flyingbrick » 02:49 am Jan 31 2011

Hey everyone!
New to dirtbike maint and have been really loving my 01 220, just a question though, it seems to leak a drop or two of oil out of trans where the counter sprocket is, is this a common problem?
How difficult is it to fix?
I wouldn't mind that much but it gets oil spots on the ground and it slings oil everywhere making it a pain to keep the engine/trans clean...
I looked on bike bandit and it looks like its only 2 o-rings that seal that shaft... is that it? Can i just remove sprocket as to change it then just change the seals?

Thanks for the help!
Joe

I believe it's 2 o-rings and a mechanical seal. You can change them all from the outside after you remove the CS sprocket.

Most bikes have an O-ring or two under a sleeve, and a regular oil seal that is pressed into the case, that seals against the OD of the sleeve.

The O-rings and sleeve can be seen here (part # 92143 is the sleeve, part # 92055 are the O-Rings):

I bpought a cheapie seal pulling tool at the local auto parts store, which makes removing the seal from the motor 1000% easier than prying with screwdrivers and picking with needlenose pliers.

It looks much like this one:
