What gearing do u guys like best 200?
i thought i had 13/52 because the po told me so, and i found first too low for my taste and only topped out at about 56mph. Way too quick to hit the redline in the woods for me. Well, i found out i had a 50 tooth after i had bought and installed a 14 tooth countershaft sprocket! The odd thing is- i love this ratio. To me, first is way more useable and it added about 6mph to the top end. Im a fan of this gearing! I notice a lot of u guys run lower ratios; anyone ever try the 14/50 combo that im using?

That 14/50 ratio is the same as the 13/47 ratio used on the early E-series bikes. You're just carrying more weight around with the larger sprockets and longer chain.
I'm currently running 13/48 because RMATV sent me a 48 rear when I told them I wanted the stock gearing. The only they have ever messed my order. Next time I will be back to the 13/47.

I like it! I thought 13/50 was a mess because first was way too low. Felt like it to me anyway.

I run 14/47 on both my E & H bikes, love that ratio. Over all I find the bike very manageable on open trails and in the tight single track...even run the Dez with that gearing.

Re: What gearing do u guys like best 200?
I was under the assumption that a larger countershaft sprocket was better due to the less severe angle of the chain? Next time i regear i will indeed go smaller, but i tell you what i love the way my bike runs with this setup. To me, it makes the gearspread as smooth as butter, but i may not be the best judge of these things, lol. It SEEMS pretty nice.SS109 wrote:That 14/50 ratio is the same as the 13/47 ratio used on the early E-series bikes. You're just carrying more weight around with the larger sprockets and longer chain.

I run a 13/52. I love it. It would climb a tree if you could keep it hooked up. lol

I have 12/48 on one rim and 12/47 on another. I will probably go with 13/50 or 52 next time.

Lol all you want, I use to be young and have the need for speed, but now it's all about enjoying the ride.Actionman wrote:Top speed.......14mph! lolVelocity_Stack wrote:12/52 here.
I like slow technical woods riding.
I'm not out to set speed records.
I enjoy the ability to make technical maneuvers at a slower pace.
After all, I am riding with my 10 year old daughter on her XR70R.
Not much fun for her if I run off and leave her.
I was just sharing what seems to be working best for me, in my surroundings and limited riding areas.

Im old too! lol. Just having fun with you. My real problem with that low of gearing is that even 13/50(my original gearing) made first too low. I always felt like I needed a gear between first and second. Its personal preference I know, but I always was either overreving on hillclimbs or lugging in second too much. I enjoy stock gearing.

I also am riding with my 6 year old on his atv so most of the time i spend on the bike is at about 11mph. its nice to be able to accidentally dump the clutch in the woods and not stall the bike though.

Re: What gearing do u guys like best 200?
I'm currently running 12/53 (!) on my '03 KDX200. I've always loved low gearing for technical single track! The technical ST that I run I almost never got out of second gear with stock gearing. Though, I do have 12, 13, 14, 15, 47, 50, and 53 tooth sprockets, and change my gearing for the ride that I'm going on. I did just do a long 140 mile trail ride with 13/47 gearing, and wished that I was at 13/50. Each trail likes different gears. It takes me 15 minutes total to change out gears.

Re: What gearing do u guys like best 200?
SR gear cluster is magic and you don't have to worry about final drive gear ratios so much
I'm changing chains at the moment, one thing I noticed is with a 50 tooth rear sprocket it eats in to the chain guard unless going to 110.link chain
Tyre height will also affect final gearing
Edit, can't use 108 link chain with 50 tooth sprocket, the 108 link chain that was in it was stretched and worn out so I was incorrect about 50 tooth sprocket eating in to the chain guard

Re: What gearing do u guys like best 200?
Stock 13/47 gearing is pretty perfect all-around for most riding.
Gearing lower is definitely of great benefit for the hard enduro tight technical tracks however. Gearing lower, often people think that the bike will accelerate faster, but that's not really how it works. It just allows you to have more drive from a near stand-still to get over the challenging technical obstacles, with less throttle vs clutch work and less clutch slipping required.
My best advice is always this:
****GEAR FOR THE SLOWEST GROUND SPEED ON TECHNICAL TERRAIN WHICH YOU'LL ENCOUNTER OCCASIONALLY****
If someone tells you stock or a 14/47-48-49 etc is great for tight singletracks, their definition of tight singletracks may equate to what I'd call slower and mid speed tracks... It varies by the region, by the trail and terrain, and by the rider's perspective.
On a KDX220R with mods (particularly a re-chambered RB head or Fredette etc shaved head, stock gearing generally is quite workable everywhere, even in hard enduro, ESPECIALLY a 220 with the Gnarly Woods pipe which is a virtually un-stallanle combination, although the 220 is more exciting in the mid speed and wide open trails with the Gnarly Desert pipe or ESPECIALLY the Oro Circuit Platinum 2.
On a KDX200 for technical terrain, which has significantly less low-mid torque vs a KDX220, gearing down to 13/48-49-50 + Gnarly Woods pipe and aftermarket Jaguar/SS109/PeakRPM ignition box is a lot more critical, as the 200 runs more like a bigger 125 when compared to a KDX220.

Re: What gearing do u guys like best 200?
I'd been running a stock 220 with Gnarly Desert Pipe and 13/48 for years.
The cylinder was shot from 2 exploding OEM ART Pistons and I needed to ride mid-season, so I bought ANOTHER "rebuilt" 220.
It came with dual sport tires and street legal requirements, and a ridiculous 14/43 gearing and corresponding very short riveted master link chain, which I believe was more for the previous owner's Supermoto wheelset (17" rear needs taller gears). RB head, Gnarly Desert pipe, Lectron 34mm.
The bike had AWESOME POWER AND ACCELERATION, & I didn't even bother checking the obviously small rear sprocket / tall ratio sprocket sizes UNTIL 2 hours in, just a short bit into the first actual woods ride on it, when the bike TOTALLY CHOKED on the first steep slow technical obstacle I hit. No amount of clutch slipping helped... Yet it rode fine on the "tight" mid speed singletracks when flogging it to the limits.
I changed to a 12/44 to utilize the new very short chain, and the bike was more at home everywhere again in tight woods, but once the chain stretched enough to squeeze in a 12/45, it was perfect again aside from the tight chain wrap on the front sprocket (not as smooth and also much faster wearing sprocket). 12/44 is slightly taller than stock, 12/45 is slightly lower than stock and close to a 13/48, my preferred gearing.
13/49 or 13/50 is definitely in ordee for trials type and hard enduro type riding, ESPECIALLY on a KDX200.
14/47 14/48 etc will feel fine for moat average riders on mild terrain, but more clutch work will be required if they ever encounter any significantly technical obstacles.
Aside from the need for gearing down for hard enduro technical terrain, the bikes will feel much faster accelerating with a taller gear like a 13/46, 13/45, 14/47 etc because the engine really thrives on having a load, as it has work to do in ordee to utilize it's peak power. Envision a very powerful big diesel dump truck. It can move mountains with it's massive power and gearing, but it quickly reva to redline and has hit 3rd gear by the time it's gotten across an intersection from a stop sign or traffic signal... The low gearing enables much more low ground speed torque and load (equivalent to the steepness of a hill on a dirt bike), but actually slows down the overall acceleration vs stock gearing or slightly taller.
*GEAR FOR THE LOWEST GROUND SPEED YOU'LL ENCOUNTER ON TECHNICAL TERRAIN*
Stock gearing is never a bad choice for most riders.
I prefer 13/48 as I prefer the 220 and technical skow terrain, but it still absolutely flies in the mid speed "tight" trails. I'm currently out of commission from a badly broken wrist due to riding recklessly fast on some mid speed trails, and I'm learning that despite my younger appearance and mentality, bones don't heal as fast when you're nearing 50 years old (47 next May!! Where did all the time go?!?), so taking a bit off my potential too speed is definitely a safer bet - as higher speed means worse injuries when you crash! Both my shoulder tears and one fractured shoulder are all due to high speeds, as was this most recent broken wrist (3rd time's a charm!).
Stock or 13/48 or 14/47 are all quite viable ratios for most...
