Advancer shaft lever not ligning up with main shaft pinion

Post by claybo »

Hi All,

Doing a top end on my 99 220 and I am in the process of putting everything back together. However, when reinstalling the advancer shaft lever, it doesn't line up.

The manual says that the small hole on the lever should align with the "notched tooth" on the main shaft pinion. However, when I line up the pin on the lever with the governor shaft, the lever doesn't even touch the main shaft pinion and is misaligned. Am I missing something? Or is something broken in the right side case? I thought I supported it when loosening the left hand nut, but maybe not?? I don't even think the cover will go on with it like this.

Any input would help. Otherwise, I'll take the right side cover off tomorrow and see what I can see.

PS Yes, I know I need to lube the gear...

I would take the cover off and check alignment of the pin in the slot. I am not saying you bent it, but maybe someone else did.

How was it when you took it apart?

I didn't notice it being like that, which leads me to believe I probably tweaked it somehow during removal. I'm going to take the side off after work and see what's up with it.

You may have broken or bent the governor pin at the bottom of the shaft inside the right side cover.

Update:

Yup governor pin definitely broken/bent. Parts on the way from Rocky Mountain. Part number 13236-1260 for anyone interested.

This occurs because many folks don't realize the nut at the top of the shaft is left-hand threaded, and you need to support the shaft while removing the nut. Fairly common mistake. Luckily you caught yours before the pin decided to muck around in your bottom end :-)
