Grip Tape Alternative?

Post by Goat »

I love the skater tape. And it has done great help for my riding control. But KDXG (correct as usual) states it is hell on my boots. I wore the first hole thru, on Sunday.
It reminds me of how much I fell in love with Talon granulated grips, until my hip got tired of the rug burn rash.
Anyone got a favorite alternative that is more rubbery?
Or maybe boots that have a plastic piece where they contact the tape?

Remember:

Boot sponsorship first.
Grip tape second.

You may be skilled enough to not rely on the tape so much now.

What are you talking about? Are you putting some sort of tape on your pegs that wore through your boots? What is going on here?

Skater tape goes on the frame. Mx lessons taught how to grip frame with your boots, using Inside heal and up the lower rear calf. Grip tape makes it way way easier to hang on. But my boots are being worn through on lower inside.
Probably varies a little depending on which bike.
Have a look at Steg Pegs, to see the cheater version of this activity.

PS. I will call O’Neal. I am sure they keep an eye on all the KDX MXers, so they can sign us while we’re young and cheap!

I’ve never heard of this but I’m not into MX. It sounds like a lot of work for little gain but what do I know? lol

It has allowed me to carry enough speed to clear my first double on the track and keep my buddy in sight (once) in the woods.
Doesn’t matter how tight the stuff is, there’s always a little race going with the group I fell in with. They race enduros as their main hobby and go to the MX practice track for change of pace and to work on speed. My main group rides: 300EXC, KX250(2T), YZ250X (x2), husky450(4T), husky350(4T).
I think they only let me hang around so they can have a longer break at the next rally point.
More speed is a little less addictive than it was at 25yo...but only a little.

If you dont mind your bike looking like poo, I have experimented with smearing autosealant (sikaflex 227) on the seat to seal holes and act as ribbed texture to the seat. because the stuff cures into a rubber like substance.

I wonder if it would work in other places. I tried putting it all over my boot to glue bits that where falling off and it seems to last a while. Might work putting that on the side of the boot too for that extra grip. Save some of that inner thigh energy from having to pidgeon toeing of inside is grippy. I will try and report back. My boots are completely trashed anyway, bit of extra rubber goo on them wont hurt.

I've heard 3m Safety Walk 310 or 370 is the go-to alternative to mineral grip tape. It is more of a texturized high-friction vinyl versus the sandpaper stuff

I couldn’t seem to find a small roll of the 3M stuff. So went with this one since I liked the name. It’s more rubbery. We’ll see how it treats me new boots. Can’t wait for that O’Neal to call, though.
