New Owner, New Member. Picked up a 97 KDX220

Post by cbova »

New to the forum, just poking around. I picked up a non running 97 220. Probably paid too much ($900) but it's mine now. The previous owner said "it just died during a longish ride" after only owning it for 3 months. He drained the oil and said it was milky. There was no coolant in the bike either. When I got it home I pulled the clutch cover and flywheel cover off. There was a little coolant behind the flywheel cover too. It looks like the engine was recently apart because the gaskets still look pretty new. At this point I'm assuming it filled the transmission with coolant and toasted the top end. I'm going to split the cases and see how it looks. Trying to decide if it's worth it for me to fix. It needs some other small stuff too, like every other bolt is missing, and the kick starter seems to slip sometimes. It's got about 14 hp worth of stickers, everything from Wiseco, to Pro Circuit, to MotoSport on it so that helps. Pro Cicuit pipe and silencer too.

I've been out of the game for while but had quads and a dirtbike in my younger days, always wanted a KDX. Recently been getting my kids into dirtbikes. My 15 year old and I just rebuild an XR100 for him to learn on. Followed by a TTR125 that needs minor work. My younger daughter and I just put together a basket case JR50, which is a KDX50 so that should be ok  for her to learn on. Figured it was time fore me to get one too. Anyone from around Southern NH?

"It's got about 14 hp worth of stickers" I'm liking this guy already. :-)

Welcome to kdxrider and KDX's.

HEY. That last picture makes that $900 sound a lot less awful. Take your time and do it right. You will have a nice bike for a long time!

As always, I encourage everyone to "check that chain tension" on all their bikes. (somewhat of a running joke amongst a few of us around here.)
Thank you for participating on kdxrider.net. :bravo:
