"What the hell did you do to your forks??"

Post by DBCooper »

So I put a new Weisco piston in my new to me 220R and was out on my third break-in run and plowed some deep sand and tucked it and broke a rib. This bike is like new with about 600 miles on it so I took the fork tubes off and sent to Don @ ZR1 Suspension in Tucson, AZ for .42 Race Techs and service and 7.5 oil. He called a couple days later and said 'What the hell did you do to these forks??" He said someone had put 90mm
preload on the stock springs. Bike rides like a completely different bike now. Amazing difference. :supz:

90 mm !! HA HA!!

I think stock is 38 mm, which is FAR from today's thinking on amount of preload. VERY little seems to be the way almost all current tuners are going.

I hope you heal well from your injury.

He said "I know why you wrecked.." Broke my rib just outside of where my roost deflector covered. I got a nice carbon fiber rib protector they use for Karting and has good full protection. The forks are amazing now.

When I got new springs I think I cut my preload spacers in half. 90mm is crazy talk.

ZR1 said they'll run 4mm, 8mm sometimes 10. I asked if I could have the spacers back and he said "No way, these go on the wall of shame"

Donnie is a great guy and I'm glad he took care of you. He's my local tuner and he's handled the suspension, including my custom built rear Showa shock, for all my KDX bikes.

It's a K1 Racegear Carbon Fiber Rib Protector. You can Google them. Usually a 100 Bucks
