looking for a kdx

Post by Roostmaster1 »

used to race mx. that was 25 years ago. always wanted a kdx. as an engineer and machinist i think i'm just as interested in restoring one and tricking it out as i am riding. looking for a project bike. i'd really love to have a '96 with the purple tank, seat and shrouds. i've found only one and it was sold by the time i conteacted the seller. looked all over the contry on CL. is there a want ad section on here or some other website that is a good source for KDX's?

thanks

Hello. Welcome to kdxrider.net. Good luck on the search. We do have a "Wanted" subforum.

Check Facebook Marketplace, Letgo and OfferUp as well. You might also want to use "dirt bike" as a search term, as sometimes people don't know the awesome bike they own. :-)

I really feel like this bike is the '96 i've been looking for. he's going to send me the VIN tonight. How to I look up the VIN to determine the year model?

I am glad you have found one close by.

Can you post a link to the ad so we can see it?

When sellers say the wrong year, sometimes it is a trick, sometimes it is because whoever sold it to them gave bad information, and the current seller is going off that.

Perhaps it’s got a 220 jug on it? Other then the carb size/bore I believe the engines are the same. I’ve got a 220 with the RB carb and head mods and a PC pipe and personally I think it has the best of both worlds. Lots of down low torque and a decent top end.
97-220 with a PC pipe. 2015- RB carb and head mod

Just got the guy to send the vin. According to kdxgarage it is in fact a ‘96. Guy claims he bout it a few months ago from someone he knew. Wouldn’t show me the entire vin, but I got enough numbers to determine year model. He’s got it advertised as an 05 but it is indeed a ‘96. He wants 1500. It’s pretty clapped out. What is it worth?

It looks like a 1996 KDX200 to me.

From Tony Blazier's site that he got from somewhere else  :

Image

Here are some of the things I see:

fairly high miles causes the seat letters to wear away like that
seat foam is lumpy sort of
pipe to spark arrestor junction is leaking (AND... the guy didn't spend the money to repair it)
missing rear brake hose guide
I the rear brake not stock?
rear brake pedal and master cylinder don't seem to line up
shifter is not stock
front tire knobs have a lot of chunking
fork boots look after market
kickstarter looks mounted one spline high
Chain guide in front of rear sprocket painfully shows just how many miles are on this bike (I am assuming at least one bolt is eaten into)

Check the rear of the frame for loop out damage. The gap between the rear fender and side panel makes me want to take a close look.

On the good side:
FMF pipe
FMF spark arrestor
toolbag still there!
You can work on your patience while waiting for purple rad shrouds to show up somewhere to buy

It will show (.198 l) on a KDX200 cylinder and (.216 l) on a KDX220R.

I am not much of a haggler usually, but I would show up with boxing gloves on to try to beat him down on price some on this one at $1,500 asking price.

I will say this:

From reading people's reports on here, plus me constantly just looking on CL and FB just to see what is out there, there are not a super ton available like years ago. Decent ones are getting harder and harder to find. Of the ones that ARE out there, even the newest one is about to be 14 model years old.

Nowadays, I am not sure on price, but a few years ago, around here, $900.

It does have the tripmeter and cable still.

This guy is a dirt bike owner, not a dirt biker. BIG difference on upkeep.

That’s exactly the bike I’m looking for! Love that color scheme. And he did come down to 1100, i pointed out to him that it was going to require a major refurb and that I would be spending some cash to get it back to its former glory, so I offered him 900 which he did not accept but said he would keep me in mind. I’m pretty sure he knew what year it is and that it is a 200. He’s probably peeling the stickers off of the swing arm now. I am a little suspicious that he wouldn’t send the entire VIN so I’m seriously thinking of reporting it to his local authorities.

And if he does call back, I’m going to insist on running that entire VIN before I buy
