Hi all!
Just picked up my 1996 KDX 200 by trading an sks rifle for it..... I'm super excited!
already bought the manual, new air filter, replaced fluids, spark plug, etc..........
I love this site and thank everybody for their input.....

i still need to clean the carb.....i have the manual, but it isnt real specific i dont think....Idk, im a 2 stroke newbie....I dont wanna mess it up ....is it easy? I assume I have to remove the seat and tank...but when i removed the tank the first time to change the spark plug, i noticed that my fuel constantly drips out, even when its in the off posisition.......

You may need a new o-ring/gasket in the petcock.

You have a good start there.

Yep, you need a petcock kit. Its a cheap and easy thing to repair. Make sure to clean the inline gas filter (mesh) located in the upper side of the petcock.

Soooo today was the first day I really got a chance to ride her......Wow!!! What an awesome bike.....5th-6th is feels pretty high up.....60-70mph?? i dont need to go that fast....Would like some more power in 1st and 2nd.....
Overall, I love her....what a great trade for me!!!

I have two of those and they both get up to about 70-75 MPH, defiantly faster then I need to go in any wooded area, but one of mine is plated so the top end comes in handy in the street ;)


as for cleaning the carb, I do it without removing anything other then the carb
first of, disconnect the fuel line
then loosen up the clamps on both sides (intake boot and air box boot) and pull the air box boot towards the rear fender
it has a little bit of a harmonica shape and if the rubber isn't too dry you should be able to pull this back with ease
this should give you enough room to pull the carb out of the intake boot (you can twist it a little bit but there is a sort of keyway molded into the carb (you'll see it when it comes out) and it might catch on there
now the carb should be hanging on the side of the bike attached only by the gascable
unscrew the cap of the carb and slowly pull the slide out

now you're ready to clean her and put her back together (but since you've come this far you may aswell replace the reeds

You should also be able to remove the spark plug with out removing the seat and tank.

"pull plug cap off, put socket on plug, insert handle and turn counter clockwise, adjust handle and repeat until plug is out"

This helps but then how does one put said spark plug back in????

you don't, you replace it with a fresh one

If you want more power a cheap and easy mod is to install a 12 tooth front sprocket.

thanks for all the help guys! what does replacing the reeds do?

new (high performance) reeds will give you a crisper throttle response
and guessing they are 20 plus years old, they could probably stand to be replaced anyway ;)
