2022 - Racing KDX Green in a sea of orange

Post by MoonStomper »

After finishing last season of the VCHSS 4th in the 50+ C, I decided to move to the B class so I could race the Main Event with my son. I know I’m nowhere near skilled enough in that class to achieve any podiums, but the courses are longer and there are rarely any bottlenecks. It’s nice being able to sleep in a little longer in the mornings too.

We have raced two of the three races this year and managed a 6th and a 16th.

Heading over to Arrington, Virginia tomorrow to ride the Dragons Back National Enduro. My graphics from COR Moto arrived this week so I was excited to spend the morning putting them on new UFO plastics I bought this winter from Jeff Fredette. I’m hoping they are worth at least minute per test.

RACE UPDATE - Dragons Back National Enduro, Arrington, Virginia
Slept good last night. Yesterday was really fun and the course was in surprisingly good shape even starting from row 144. My buddy Fred parked next to us with his KDX and lined up on 150 so we got to chat between tests a little which was cool. He crashed five minutes in and broke his fairing and headlight badly (hey Jeff, will be placing another order soon!). Then we started looking more closely and saw he ripped his kIPS cover off the left side. We told him no worries, if she runs, RIDE! He did and had a great day. KDX is BEAST.

Before the race I saw two other KDXs, don’t know how many there actually were. At the start I took it easy and worked up into a steady rhythm chasing a C rider in my row that seemed a little quicker than me early knowing it was going to be a long day of over 50 miles including transfers. Some of the tests were on trails we raced earlier this season in VCHSS and they were super fun so I really enjoyed hitting them again, especially one particular step up jump that I sailed off of.

At one point I saw him stop to assess a logjam in a muddy steep bank creek crossing where a guy’s bike was stuck in a deep rut in the main line. I jammed on the rear brake sliding past him as I a looked at my options, then quickly steered hard left and gassed it across and up a high line free of traffic. Tubliss is like cheating in those situations. From there on I increased pace and my confidence built.

The temps were low 70’s all day so I wasn’t worried about not bringing water. I don’t like the extra weight and distraction. On hotter days it would be nice to have someone parked at the fuel stop with water and gas. We were lucky we had a friend there this time with gas since we missed the drop off time for our can. Not sure I needed to but I topped off before test 4 and switched to Reserve just to be safe. Will be interesting to see how much I used.

The transfer to 5 was KNARLY!!! Super rocky and steep, technical climb almost a mile long, saw several wrecks, but I stayed clean and motored up unscathed. First time all day that I questioned my tire setup (ran Pirelli Scorpion Mid-soft XC 120-100/18 & 80-100). This was a tire Jeff Fredette recommended that both Henry and I ran for this race and it did great on identical setups, but he ran higher pressures. The rocks on this transfer definitely put my ultra heavy front tube to the test, wished I was running a few less psi (was at 6.5 rear & 9.5 front) on my Tubliss rear, but punched through fine and actually kept up with some fast guys. Made me wonder what that test 5 held in store. It turned out to be tight, twisty soft dirt and super fun for me.

Actually felt like I could have ridden the 6th test and was heading that way when I caught up with my son who had wrecked pretty hard on that stage and was ready to head to the truck. Last year at Sumter I had started the 5th test after finishing my required 4, but quit because of heavy mud and aggravated tendonitis in my elbow. So yesterday was a big win for me. Only dropped the bike a couple times, both due to mental errors. What a difference a year has made to both my bike prep and my and experience.

Ended up finishing ahead of a guy from my hare scramble series class on a KTM that I got close to last year but never beat. My son Henry ended up 3 seconds out of 3rd (crash!) in 200B and was fast enough for 7th in 200A if he’d stayed on for the 6th test (thanks Doug!). He really digs this format because it’s like the mountainbike enduros that we did for years before coming over to motor power.

This race was one of my favorites last year. Super rowdy fun course, with speed and flow, lots of passing opportunities and some jumpy terrain. It was pretty dusty outside the woods here, but in the woods it was great racing. I’m really excited to roll up with my new COR MOTO graphics kit on the ol’ girl too, plus I scored a new purple Renthal bar to set it off.

This weekend we will miss a backyard XC race (it’s Mother’s Day!!!) at Kairos that VXCS is putting on. This is a Virginia series that I have not been able to participate in yet because my dates never work out. It kills me too because this event is on my local trails that I hit year round…

You guys are both doing great! Glad you like the enduro format. It’s a bit different in that you never know what is around each corner, mud hole or hill top since you do not ride the same trail again. Puts a premium of reading trail and selecting lines. Congrats to you and your son!

We really enjoyed the Enduro. Has us thinking about making a series run next year. Henry is planning to play football this summer/fall so we are just cherry picking events this season. We are planning to get some training with our friend Derek Klotter (Race Ready). He’s the VCHSS Grand Champion and is also planning to do the NEPG in 2023. Hopefully we can make some strides in the right direction and find some success.

Need to come up with a trailer that will work. I’ll need to study Doakley’s rig and see what’s proven!

My rig works well for one, it stinks for two people. You'll be driving a lot. We found it worked best for us to try to arrive at the enduro location by about 1:00 on Saturday before the Sunday race, hopefully no later. That way we had time to rest and not be in a "rushed" state of mind. It also generally gave us time to get a better parking spot and walk around the site That usually meant spending Friday night on the road somewhere, generally a truck stop. We drove a van pulling my 5x8 cargo trailer. At truck stops, I slept in the trailer on a fold out bunk beside the KDX, my race partner slept on a blow up bed beside his Honda in the van. We preferred this to hauling a pick up with bikes in the back because it kept the bikes out of sight in the truck stops. When we got to the race and removed the bikes we had much more room. If I had it to do over, I would get a larger cargo trailer, at least a 6x12. I think with a 6x14 you could put both bikes in the trailer at an angle and still sleep two people adequately on the road. At the race, you would really appreciate the added room too.

Re: mud allergies

As the Blue Ridge race approached the weather went from promising to threatening and my motivation level waned. One of my favorite ever dry courses last year, I knew it would be a slugfest in the wet. With a plethora of lame excuses to choose from (believe me, with my son’s excuses I have quite a list!), we chose to skip. Instead we planned to go explore some trail system called Doe Mountain in eastern Tennessee.

I love exploring fresh single track and was mildly excited about this. What was holding me back was multi-fold: thunderstorms in the forecast, area requires spark arrestors (which I don’t have), a two hour drive to get there, $5+/diesel, ride and parking fees… But things didn’t get done on Friday (lack of energy and motivation) so on Saturday we slept in and decided to just ride something local which ended up working out in our favor.

We went ten minutes from our house and rode a new practice race course that my son and his buddy built on their farm that RIPPED! It was fast, it had rocks and off-camber side track, serious hill climbs, creek crossings, up-creek scrambles, ledges, a table jump, a field sprint, and some logs too. Just as we were about worn out here comes a crack of thunder and a two hour rain storm. We grabbed a bbq sandwich on our way home and wrapped up a great day.

That Saturday evening was nice, hosed off the bikes, had a couple beers, not scrambling doing laundry or rebuilding clutch master cylinders or mounting tires… snuggled on the couch with my wife watching our Netflix show. Slept in on Sunday and checked in on RaceLapsLive to see about my boys who did go to the race… weather and conditions were perfect… right up until the morning race was over and then they got hammered by a storm before the main event. Each lap took almost an hour. Most of the A riders only got two laps in.

Yep. I made the right decision.

I love the mud races but, of course, that's because I normally do well in them. Most of these boys in AZ don't seem to know how to ride in the stuff!

Anyway, glad you had a good day riding regardless of racing or not. A good day on the bike beats any day at home IMO.

This weekend’s race is going to be a scorcher with temps Sunday up around 100 F. Add on top of this a 1/4” of rain in the forecast and we’re looking at an interesting time… Last year’s event was a dust bowl, so at least it will be different!

Syria, Virginia- May 22, 2022

We lucked out with the weather on this one. It was plenty hot, but the severe thunder storms held off till after we were packed up and rolling out. The dust also wasn’t as bad this year. The water truck guys had worked hard managing that without overdoing it.

Ready to race…

This is probably the most hard enduro of all the series races with river rock strewn single track, tricky mountain stream crossings, slippery roots in all the worst places, steep climbs and sketchy descents with limited options. It also has really fast 6th gear pinned field sprints into hairpins, a dozen jumps, creek jump options for the A riders and the A rider wannabes.

Expecting a hot day, I began dosing KDX juice the day before and throughout the morning. The race crushed me pretty good and the 95+ temps were rough. Wrestling that green monster around those mountain trails really kicked my butt, and cramps NEVER happened thanks to this stuff.

We left at 8am and arrived with plenty of time to get ready. This race is held on a beautiful farm north of Charlottesville, Virginia rich with Civil War history as it lies west of Richmond and is on the pass into the Shenandoah Valley.

Saturday I got a shakedown ride in with my 50A buddy and neighbor mainly focusing on starts. Did about fifteen of these with a flag and a timer and I figured out a couple things…

1 - my wheel comes up on a good get off so by pressing my chest down to the bar pad I can minimize this without letting off the throttle.
2 - holding the throttle cracked open at kick gives me power to get off hard and quick.
3 - the clutch actuator mod is really paying off and it makes a big difference getting off the line.
4 - leaving my feet off the pegs like the GP road racers do while laying forward helps with control and I’m still able to pull my feet on in time to grab third, rather than trying to rush the transition which allows me to focus on the clutch.

My son was lined up ahead of me a few rows in 200B. We both were far right, lined up for the shorter inside right hander around a a clops of trees into a zig zag round bale corner stretch leading out of the flat and short mowed hay field. The first corner was wet, but the inside line looked fairly perfect and that’s where I wanted to initiate lean angle to accelerate across to the left hand hay bale on the opposite side. Henry had the same idea and he got the hole shot here last year.

When his flag dropped, his foot did too and that KTM 200 XC-W fired off the line surging out with a rush of dust and noise. He dove into the corner first and disappeared behind the trees momentarily before popping out around the other side in first and hard on the gas. That’s when things went wrong and the back In came around and down he went with our buddy Mason washing out directly behind him. He quickly was up and spinning around and chasing back into the very large pack.

Henry’s start, 200B…
https://youtu.be/dKZKbAZoGEE

After watching that $&£T$&%W, I knew I’d have to be a little careful getting back on the clutch/throttle after entering the turn. If ol’ girl fired though I was going for it. Had to show my son how it’s done!

My start, 50B…
https://youtu.be/edUqkH-ioow

I was actually slow to respond to the girl’s flag drop in spite of her obvious tell, but as bikes all around me began to fire I got that short kicker down with one smooth stroke and hammered off the line with the bar pad rising against my chest and toes dragging. Onto the pipe in a rush I found the shifter snicking third still WOT and my peripheral vision told me I had a shot if I could hang on. I was well clear of the only rider on my right and I leaned toward my inside right just at the end of the tape and stayed in the dryer dirt long enough to set my angle and slip more clutch and aim at the hay bale across to my left.

I sensed a guy on my left from the far outside who was on a run, but I knew he couldn’t turn with me and I stayed focused on getting to the Moose Racing flag first which I did and then just ripped it from there on out of the field.

I managed to hold off a challenger through the hay bales until we were nearly out of the first field before letting him by so I could follow and learn the course. Once into the second field I had the power to stay out front but was too aggressive in the corners in a few spots and gave away some positions. The woods single track was knarly stuff, and I was sure I’d get passed in there but managed to keep going pretty well by not being stupid.

Guys would catch me in an especially challenging section and I’d just relax and scramble on through as I heard them get jammed up and falling behind me. This was a rather pleasant sensation aside from being maxed out physically just handling the bike. The IRC VE33 set up Tubliss at 5.5 psi was definitely getting the job done and my confidence climbing the steep and knarly grew quickly.

Coming through the scoring tent I found myself in 8th which was okay. It was really tough out there so I hoped I could grab another spot. After the second lap I saw I was in 6th, which surprised me because I’d dropped her in there at least once and got a little stuck (this happened on all my laps which is why I was so whipped!). After the third lap I found myself in 4th with a white flag waving!

I’d actually ridden that lap hoping it was the last one, bike control was becoming a serious issue and I was very lucky I didn’t crash in a few spots. Knowing I was over my limit without having killed myself I raised my own white flag and pulled off. My arms and hands were so dead I couldn’t raise my goggles!

Tickled to have achieved 4th position and knowing I’d never catch 3rd without serious risk of life and limb I called it a day. Besides, I got the hole shot and showed myself I could ride with these boys. I cruised on back to the truck and collapsed under the tent with a water jug to pour over my head. It took me probably ten minutes or more to peel off my gear as I laid on the grass and swigged water from the jug and poured it over my head. I’d made the right call. Final results gave me 5th which was all I deserved and my best ever finish in 50B. No doubt about it, a skilled rider can still win on the venerable KDX, maybe it’s easier on those new bikes, but there is pride in ripping that old green machine.

Best thing was I didn’t get hurt and my KDX is unscathed too. We all got off the course healthy and had a great time.

Hardware! Tracy out toughed all of us and got third in 50A.
