Another CORCS (Colorado) Hare Scramble at RAM Offroad Park

Well, my son and I decided to do another CORCS race this year, and since this one is only 15 miles from us, it was a perfect opportunity. Since I was riding with the "C1" group and it included the "C Super Senior 50+ (AKA - Old Farts ;-), we started at 0830, which was nice since the temps were still relatively cool.

Even though I thought I got a decent start for my row, my son had to inform me after the race that I was almost dead last! I was able to work my way up through the pack a bit, but only ended up getting 10th out of 19 old farts. Even though I wasn't concerned with my start, I should have been. During the first lap while going up a hill, two guys crashed in front of me and backed everything up. I was stuck for at least 30+ seconds behind them. There was another instance where I was delayed as well. After looking at the final results, the 5th - 10th place finishers were within 1 minute of each other. One of those "shoulda-coulda-woulda" things.

Since they changed up the front track section a bit, I forgot about how one section of the track now requires a good run at the first jump. It used to be a slow approach or you would over jump it. I hit it at mid-speed, and after getting up in the air, said "OH, SHI^!" I cased it and my helmet face slammed down on the bars. I'm thankful that my GoPro and mount took the impact, but the bad thing is that my Proshot mount broke and my GoPro went flying! At least it wasn't my head that flew off! Art (Vossman) happened to be at the race and noticed my rookie move, so he was able to retrieve my GoPro and even use it for a few more shots - THANKS ART!!

Once again my son outdid me and ended up 4th out of 32 in his class, which I'm super proud of him. Since SS109 gave me crap last race about not having some GoPro footage, I've attached a short clip of the race that ends with me casing the jump and breaking my GoPro mount. Overall it was a really fun time and as always, I was happy to get through the race unscathed. Including a bunch of pics below as well.

Who, me?

:prayer: Man, you were doing way better than I would have. I'm not about getting too far off the ground on an MX track as I'm chicken! Something about being old and things break easier keeps my ego in check. Considering that looks like a race that doesn't cater to the strengths of the KDX at all and favored the big bore bikes, you did excellent my brother! :supz:

Great job out there! You were making good time on the other guys.

Nice footage, clean passing & then dicing with that Yamaha. On that vid I thought you bailed, but read you finished mid pack which is still a decent finish. Awesome to hear you on the pipe passing slower riders 👍

Haha! I still enjoy jumping the smaller stuff, but I'm not a fan of bigger doubles anymore. I fact, there was a set of doubles in the back area of the track that I was rolling, and years before I didn't have any issues at all hitting them on my CRF450. At my age I am really steering away from the track style riding and loving the single/double track riding much more. That's the main reason I picked up the KDX last year. My CRF is getting head work done now and once I get it back together, it's going up for sale.

I did another post in the "Riding Pics and Vids" where we went riding in the mountains. I really enjoy that part much more than racing on a majority track-style course.

Thanks! I thought finished better than what the results were, but like I mentioned earlier, my start totally sucked, so I ended up mid-pack. I treat these races like a marathon - just trying to finish.

Luckily I didn't crash. It's a decent size jump, but fortunately it wasn't bigger. I love riding this KDX and it has way more usable power than I need. Fun times!

The hare scrambles out here in CO are a lot different than back east and are definitely more fast-paced. They usually incorporate part of a track (not the big jumps) and then some little technical sections. I would prefer racing a course that has more technical - trees, rocks, roots, etc.

So cool! I love seeing that kickstand hanging off the swing arm as you are sending that jump haha. Nothing better than a KDX on a MX track!

GATOROC,

Are you running 7/8" or 1-1/8" bars? How do you like the stiffness with the crossbar? Do you have experience with and without the crossbar for reference? I run the Rental Fat Bars and have also run Pro Taper Contours both without cross bars, but would like to try the Twin Walls, I just don't need to be spending the money right now for simply a comparison haha!

Wow, not sure how I missed this reply?! The only bars I've ever ran on my CRF450R and KDX are the Renthal 7/8" H971 (Carmichael bend). Even though I've wanted to try several other bars, I've never ventured out, so these are the only bars I know. Sorry I can't provide any informative feedback!

No worries Todd. Clearly they must be a solid set of bars if you've never ventured outside of them! I'll eventually try some twin walls with the crossbar and then be able to better see the difference in stiffness. Honestly I probably won't really even tell haha. Just another ploy to get me to spend more money on my bike!
