Bad news for the rest of my racing and riding season. I'm scheduled for some major eye surgery and anticipate a long but ultimately successful recovery. Unfortunately I won't be able to ride for 4 months or likely more, it all depends on how fast my eye recovers and what my level of vision is after healing. Between Covid and this latest development I decided to just put the bike into storage until I can safely ride again. Today I changed to fresh ATF, cleaned the carb and drained the gas tank completely. I also poured a little 2s oil into the cylinder and kicked the engine over a few times to spread the oil. Then I polished up all the shiny metal just so she would look pretty! She'll be ready when I am! In the meantime.......

Greetings, KDX race fans! Just checking in for a brief update. The eyes are progressing “as planned” per the doc. I can see well enough to drive but cannot ride yet. Don’t want the bouncing and cannot risk a fall. Still not allowed to exercise or strain in any way. I CAN however, work on the bike. So I decided after more than a full racing season it might be a good idea to refresh the top end just for kicks. Ordered a new Wiesco piston and all the parts and gaskets.

I also decided, what the hey? Might as well send the Head off to Ron Black for his mod while I’m at it. So I pulled the head yesterday. What I found was the cylinder looks great! No scratches or scoring at all and a nice crosshatch pattern still.

Renewing chain and sprockets too and sticking with 13/49. And a new Shinko Fatty front tire. The old gal is gonna’ rip even better now for sure! I’ll post a ride report as soon as able.
Meanwhile........

EDIT: you know, it just dawned on me, if for some reason I am unable to race, meaning my eyes do not recover sufficiently, somebody is going to get one hell of a nice KDX 220!

Haha! Thanks, guys. Dr. released me from restrictions on activity yesterday unless I cannot see well enough. He left that decision up to me. I think I’ll stay off the bike until I can see the trees better! I CAN start exercising again though so that will be good. Maybe in a little while I can do a little light practice on the local MX track and the turn track. No trees to dodge there!

Well.... it’s complicated but NEPG and AMA are re-opening the 2020 National Enduro season. The Cherokee National Enduro will run 6/7 and online registration on Livelaps.com starts at 8 tonight. Max 550 riders with NO wait list or race day signups due to COVID. It’s a risk of $75 but I’m thinking I’ll enter anyway. I haven’t ridden yet since the eye surgery but I think I can at least putt my way through the first test staying out of the way and not hitting any trees. Hope to get the top end with RB head mod together this weekend and maybe give her a test ride next week.
Out of shape, impaired eyesight but still crazy!

I am. I’m going to sign up in the back of the pack though. Fewer people behind me that way. The trail will be more beat up, but easier to see. My only objective will be to finish the first test safely no matter how long it takes!

Yes. Good idea on not being the one to clear out the spider webs. Just get out there, and see how it goes without worrying about having to keep pulling over for others to pass.

Well...to make a long story very short, I decided not to ride in the Cherokee National Enduro. Just not ready so the wiser choice is to sit this one out.

Did you ride enough yet to evaluate the RB head mod?

Haven’t ridden at all except in the parking lot to break in the new piston and rings. That’s part of the decision not to race this weekend.
