You can also chuck up a new nut in a lathe and counterbore it to remove a small portion of the threads to be able to sit over the protruding end of the splines, instead of making a custom washer/spacer stack.

Here's my 2 cents worth:
I'm an amateur rider. I'm 50+ years old. I like to race, even though I always finish almost last. I still enjoy it. I have 2 bikes: a 2015 Suzuki RMZ250 and a 2005 Kawasaki KDX200. I love riding them both. I choose which bike to ride depending on the ride or race track. I know many don't have the option of 2 bikes. I consider myself lucky. Although the KDX was a bit of a basket case, and I spent the time and money and effort to make it rideable again. But I think many overthink what bike they should get. Get one that goes and just ride it.
